Outlook "synchronizing folders"?

My Outlook 2007 (Vista 64 bit on Lenovo) will frequently begin "synchronizing
folders", significantly slowing my machine and often putting Outlook into
non-response mode. I don't know what it is synchronizing with...not a MS
exchange server (do not have), or mobile device (do not sync mail, use
iTunes).

How can I turn this function off?

Synchronizing folders is part of the send/receive process. Disable
send/receive and there should no longer be any folder synchronization.

Synchronizing folders still happenns when send/receive is disabled. I
can't seem to do anything to stop it. And it doesn't just slow down
Outlook...it makes every application virtually unusable for several
minutes.

It only stared doing this in the last 7 days.
