Outlook reinstall problems

G

Gman

I had to reinstall Outlook 2003 due to HDD failure. Was able to
save/backup all Outlook related files to CD before removing old HDD,
including .pst, nk2, internet settings files.

I installed XP Pro with all updates, installed Outlook with all
updates, neutralized the Outlook.pst file that the install created,
loaded the saved files to the Outlook folder, launched Outlook and all
the old Mail, Contacts, Tasks were there, however, there were two
Personal Folders entries in the Folder Pane, with duplicate folder
entries within both.

Second, there wasn't any Send/Receive button in any of the Toolbars,
nor was there any way to add that button to any of them, Std, Advanced,
Web.

Third, there were no entries in the Email Accounts pane.

How do I go about correcting these problems?

You have to create the email account.
They are not part of the .pst file.
Just create a new one and enter the details.

Once you have an email account setup you will get the Send/Recieve buttons
back.

Right click on the Personal Folder you don't want and select Close Personal
Folder

Thanks Mark,

I thought I had tried the Email Account set up thing, but had a hickup
while Testing the Settings for one of my accounts, so I guess it didn't
take. Anyway, that got the Send/Receive buttons back and they work,
for the account I was able to set up.

However, when I right click on either of the two Personal Folders, the
'Close Personal Folder' option is not active, greyed out.

Should I Delete the .pst file that the new install created? Or????

Thanks for your help.

Try this

1. Close Outlook.
2. Start Control Panel, and then double-click Mail.
3. Click Show Profiles, click your profile, and then click Properties.
4. Click Data Files.
5. Click the duplicate personal folder, click Remove, click Yes, click
Close, click Close again, and then click OK.
6. Start Outlook. The duplicate personal folder should not be present.

Mark, this didn't work. Anything else?

2. Start Control Panel, and then double-click Mail.
3. Click Show Profiles,

There was only one profile, and it is labled 'Outlook'.
click your profile, and then click Properties.
4. Click Data Files.

I did that for the 'Outlook' profile, and only one data file shown
5. Click the duplicate personal folder, click Remove,

No duplicates and could not remove that one data file

Still have two Personal Folders

You have a corrupt Outlook profile.
You must create a new Outlook profile from scratch. Set that profile to use
your existing PST file as its default. Then you will be able to R click and
close the new PST file that the new profile created.

Thanks Russ,

I'm not trying to be a pain, but how do I create a new Profile? I do
not recall being given the chance to create any profile. When does
that happen? Do I Delete the existing 'Outlook' profile? Just point
me in the right direction, I like to decipher MS' Knowledgebase
articles. It's like solving an all-in-one treasure hunt, crossword
puzzle and Clue.

Will that also clear up the problem I'm having with not getting the
suggested name drop down list when entering an address? (I put a copy
of my old .nk2 file in the same folder where I put the old .pst file,
as well as all the other Outlook files I saved from the old install.)

While we're at it, my Contacts list does not appear when I click on
TO:, CC: or BCC. An error message tells me the associated Address book
can not be opened, I click OK and get a screen to select a name, which
is blank. When I click the upper right-hand drop down box, there are
two entries for CONTACTS. When I select the second one, my Contacts
appear and I can select a name. I am assuming that is a result of the
two Personal Folders and perhaps the corrupted profile?

BTW, I went through the process you suggested to another OP to make
sure the Outlook Address Book was listed as an email directory and that
it was associated the Contacts folder. All was as it should be.

I really do appreciate the help I am getting.

Sorry to be so dense Russ. I finally figured out that the 'Outlook'
profile was automatically created when Outlook was started and the
email accounts established.

So, after playing around with the Add / Remove features in Control
Panel 'Mail' and deleting several of the 'new' .pst files, I was able
to create a new profile. Now I have only one Personal Folders and it
is pointing to my 'old' .pst file. All of my old Mail, Tasks, Contacts
and Calander entires are back. Whew.

Now, about getting that old .nk2 file associated with this new profile.
What next Kimo Sabe?
