Outlook quietly sending 'not read receipts' - help!

Christoph

Several weeks ago I switched to 2003 from the earlier version. And then
two days ago Outlook began sending masses of 'not read: (email subject
line)' emails to many of my contacts including myself as I sometimes
put myself in cc. The problem is that they HAD been all read! I do not
usually open my incoming mail but use the preview pane. But usually
this should suffice, shouldn't it?Also, I use Hotmail as my primary and
single email account.
I know that several of my contacts do not use read receipts but still
they are being sent them!
The 'not read' email contains no text, just an attachment called
'winmail.dat'.
This has been quite embarrassing and I am now afraid of opening outlook
because I am worried that more receipts will be quietly sent. I have
changed all tracking options to no no no - I generally also disagree
with the concept of read receipts.
What else can I do to keep Outlook from sending all these lying 'not
read receipts'? Is it quietly storing more emails that will be sent out
the next time i press 'send/receive'?
I have looked at many posts here and some symptoms are similar but not
all in this combination.
Please help!
Christoph.

Not necessarily. It depends on the Reading Pane settings.

Brian, thanks for your reply.
I have checked (with the UTP cable unplugged) and the Reading Pane
settings were ok - as usual the read emails went from being bold to
'normal' - also in the web interface of Hotmail. So if this is not what
causes Outlook to send out 'not read' emails, what else could it be?
Any advice or help would be very much appreciated! Thanks.
Christoph

What are they?

What type of account are you using? And what do you mean by "also in the
web interface of Hotmail"? Do you mean that the messages went from bold to
normal there? What does that have to do with Outlook?
So if this is not
what causes Outlook to send out 'not read' emails, what else could it
be?

Disable sending immediately and disable the send/receive interval for the
account. Then read some new messages and use the methods described in the
link below to see of the Outbox has any receipts queued in it. If not, the
problem is not Outlook's. If so, then it is. However, if it is, I don't
have any ideas what to do about it.
