How do I change it back to English?

I tried Tools>Options>Spelling ... but under Language, French is the only
available dictionary. Where is the English dictionary?

Tools, Options, Spelling, Language. If you click on the Arrow down to
the right of French are no options available?

Hope this helps.

Only lnaguage available is French.

How do I get English? My PC is set up for English. I don't type in or know
French. I just turned on my spell checker and it marked almost every word
as wrong in Newsreader, so I did some investigating and found the only
dictionary available is French.

First off, Outlook does not include a newsreader. It uses
Outlook Express to provide access to newsgroups. As for your
problem, have you recently installed or upgraded to Office
2007? If so, take a look at this article.

You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some
languages in Outlook Express 6.0 after you install the 2007
Microsoft Office system
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932974

Here are a couple of free spell checkers that you may find
helpful.

Spell Checker for OE
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spelloe.html

Spell Checker for OE 2.1
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2952

I was able to get around this issue because I had a copy of
Office 2003. You can install the Proofing tools from the Office
2003 installation CD and it will restore the spell checking
capabilities in Outlook Express.

Good luck

The French have a word for this... but I don't know what it is.

No, smartass, Nepatsfan found the issue. Microsoft again fvked us by
breaking built-in functionality with the install of Office 2007 (which, btw,
has no newsreader that I can find).

Not surprising, since no verson of Office has one.

Outlook Express is the MS newsreader.

Thanks so much for the KB article link - that was exactly my problem!
Microsoft screwed us again.

I really fail to see why Office 2007 should break OE functionality -
*especially* when Office 2007 has no newsreader that I can find.

I tried the OE spell checker, but it wouldn't work for me (didn't catch
a single error).

However I did find a cure for this problem - Thunderbird
(http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/features.html). It seems to
handle email and newsgroups and (with the free lightning
add-on(https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2313)) all of
my calendar functions too. And, it's free!

Thanks again for helping me figure out what caused the problem!

Ask in an OE group. Notice this group has NOTHING to do with OE.

OMG! You are so right!

Nevermind that OE is integrated in XP. Nevermind that XP books regularly
write about OE.

You are a frickin' GENIUS!!!!!

Thank you so much for pointing out.....well, whatever you pointed out.

Bless you! May your path be strewn with people just like you!

Outlook Express is the MS newsreader.

With the release of Vista, Microsoft has decided to "abandon" Outlook
Express. Whenever you install Office 2007, MS purposely "breaks" the
proofing tools that Office "shares" with Outlook Express. Lets all
hope that MS hears all the complaints!!!!!

Well they're not likely to are they, as, as you state correctly, OE has been
superceded by Windows mail...

Not at all true. Outlook Express still exists in Windows Vista;
Microsoft simply renamed it "Windows Mail," which is nothing more than
the latest release of Outlook Express. There are some differences
under the hood, but from a look and feel standpoint, Windows Mail is
almost identical to Outlook Express.

Personally I'm glad they changed the name. The old name was far too
frequently confused with Outlook, a very different program.

MS may have re-labled OE to "Mail" for Vista but are not likely to
ever send it into XP, even with the extended availability.

I agree, but I didn't suggest otherwise.
