Outlook mysteriously sending out 100s of "message not read" receip

Every now and then when I start up Outlook 2003, it'll start sending out 100s
of emails with this similar message:

"Your message

To: (e-mail address removed)
Subject: Hello, World!
Sent: 1/19/2006 11:27 PM

was deleted without being read on 4/9/2006 6:13 PM."

The messages don't show up in my Outbox or Sent folder; they just start
getting sent. Any idea as to what is going on?

Thanks

I have McAfee VirusScan 10.0, and it updates itself regularly. Would that
catch something like this?

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like read receipts. Does it happen after you empty the trash? If so,
change your read receipt settings to not send receipts back automatically.

Yes. The 'worm' is called 'Outlook' and this behaviour is apparently built
in to it!

When I find a fix, I may just start using it as a mailer again - it's a good
calendar.

There is no way to turn these off that i can see. It remains a breach of
privacy and security.

Thanks John, but every other post on this subject suggests that is the fix.

It doesn't work!

I have tested it over and over and the 'Not Read' messages continue to be
sent out.

I can reproduce the issue on demand. I suggest it is a flaw that needs to
be addressed for security and privacy issues.

I am having the same problem and I can't just stop using Outlook.

My machine appears to only send these "not read" emails after I have
moved email between folders in Outlook. I'm not sure, but it seems to
be when I move an email between a pop3 folder and a hotmail folder. I
believe the email are sent from my hotmail account.

I only know about them, because my mom and my sister asked why they are
getting a bunch of weird email from me. I don't know who else has
received these emails from me. Neither of them ask for read receipts,
so I can't figure out why Outlook sends them out. And why isn't
anything stored in the Sent folder!!

If anyone figures this out, please let me know.
