outlook express spell checker

Since upgrading to XP my spell checher doesn't work, the
error message is: "an error occured while spelling was
being checked". I check the M S Knowledge base and it
says another program is required for it to work, such as
microsoft word 97 or microsoft works. Both are installed
but it still doesn't check spelling. Any suggestions?
