Outlook Express 6 very slow to load

Using windows 2000 professionaL and outlook express 6. It takes about two
minytes to load and then works fine. I've read various things about how to
resolve this but nothing seems to work - or the explanations are too brief to
follow a step by step cure.

I should also mention that the problem may be connected with Outlook 2000,
which I was using but changed to OE because although Outlook 2000 was loading
quickly, it seemed to hang for about three or four minutes before completing
send/receive. There also seems to be a connection with the filling in of
forms nwhich also hang for three minutes or more.

I've tried to understnd instructions for resolving this problem, which does
seem to have a solution, but I cannot make any headway as I cannot find a
step by step solution. Can anyone help? Any suggestions would be gratefull
accepted.

Suggestion: When OE finally loads, disable the options "Send/Receive on
start up" and "Go directly to my inbox", especially if a Hotmail account is
the default mail account.

Then take care of the following:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
