Outlook.exe starts itself

Operating System: Windows xp MCE
Issue Description: I use Outlook 2000 for email. A week ago I began
receiving multiple copies of incoming email messages. The original arrives,
and then a few minutes later more arrive one by one. I have checked with my
service
provider and confirmed that only one message is received to their
server, the multiple copies are occurring on my computer. When I have
Outlook application running, if I open Windows Task Manager I will find
only Outlook running in the Applications tab, but looking at the
Processes tab I find 2, 3 or more of Outlook.exe running and using
memory. If I close the Outlook application and leave the .exe files in
Processes, I continue to receive incoming messages, evidenced by the incoming
mail icon appearing in the tray, and also a tone sounding. This occurs
without theOutlook
application being open. If I delete the Outlook.exe items open in the
Processes tab, within an hour or so one or more Outlook.exe processes
are operating but none appear in the Applications tab. Please advise
how to change settings or whatever to deal with this problem. After this
problem began I installed the service packs for Office 2000 but they did not
correct the
problem. The only other changes have been automatic updates, but I don't
know which ones may have arrived

Something is holding Outlook.exe open. It could be your antivirus software,
antispam software, fax software, synch software. Those are normally the most
common culprits. Antivirus especially can cause one of your other symptoms,
receiving multiple copies of an email.

Also make sure you're using the latest Office SP. Reapply it if necessary.
Let me know how it goes

Thanks very much for your fast reply to an annoying problem. I never thought
about antivirus being the culperate. I get daily updates from McAfee, and I
can easliy see how that could have recently introduced some weird echo
effect. I'll follow the link and see what I can do.

I would also appreciate your comments about the SPs. There are 3 available
for Office 2000. I installed the first 2 and they didn't solve the
multiple-emails problem, but they didn't seem to do any harm. When I
installed SP3 it totally screwed up my email: messages were received not
showing any sender or subject; I couldn't send a message after composing it
because Outlook couldn't find my address book...you get the picture, it was a
disaster, and I had to do a 'system restore' back several weeks to recover.
I have a theory about this, and I'd appreciate your comments: My computer
tower is new (January 27), but pre-Vista. It has a trial (60 day) version of
Office 2003. I never activated it, buy when I installed SP3 to Office 2000,
suddenly Office 2003 icons replaced my Office 2000 icons for Outlook and
PowerPoint even though I hadn't activated the trial. When I tried to open
Outlook using the "new" icon, that's when my email got screwed up as
described above. Also, any possible ties to the multiple email problem?
Thanks in advance if you have time to address these points.

It's probably not related to the multiple email problem but likely to having
two Outlooks on one PC.

That's what I think too, that the second Outlook partially opened and the two
versons were both trying to run. Just to annoy me further, when I tried to
uninstall the trial version, it was tied in some way to Office 2000 and
caused a crash. I could not successfully uninstall it. I've tried to isolate
it by renaming the file with the trial Office subfiles, but I don't know if
that will help.
