Outlook Calendar sends unreadable attachment when inviting attende

Using Outlook 2003, when user sends invites from inside a new calendar event,
the invitee receives the email and it contains only an attached file titled
att28473943 (or some other 'random' number. I've tried to create a new
calendar event and send invites, but the invitee continues to recieve this
type of email, rather than the normal invite which allows them to accept,
deny etc.

Also of note: We are using Outlook 2003, but are not using MS Exchange
server. Instead, we use IMAP and MDaemon with Outlook Connector 2.1.3 from
Alt-N technologies. This process has worked fine as recently as yesterday.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

It seems your issue is: the invitee receives junk meeting request all of a
sudden. Is that correct?

Based on my experience, this can be caused by many reasons. Please try the
following troubleshooting steps to narrow down this issue:

* Test in Outlook Safe Mode
===============================

Outlook Safe Mode can narrow down issues which are caused by any
extensions, corrupted resources, files, registries, or templates.

1. Click Start | Run.
2. In the Open box, type: "Outlook /safe" (without the quotation marks)
Notes: There is a space character between Outlook and the forward slash (/).
3. Click OK.

If it works OK with Outlook Safe Mode, then please follow the steps below
to resolve this issue:

# Step 1: Disable Outlook add-ins

1. Select Tools>Options>Other>Advanced Options>Add-In Manager and then
clear all the checkboxes.
2. Add one check back each time to the list of Add-In, restart Outlook,
and repeat the above procedure. Once the issue reappears again, we can
determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it.

# Step 2: Disable Instant Messaging

1. Start Outlook. Click Tools>Options.
2. On the Other tab, uncheck "Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft
Outlook". Click OK to save the settings.
3. Restart Outlook.

# Step 3: Disable Word Editor:

1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Mail Format.
2. Click to clear the "Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages" check
box.

If this does not work, then please create a new Outlook profile and try
again:

* Create a new profile
================

If this issue persists, I suggest that we create a new Outlook profile. A
new profile is a new environment for us to use Outlook. To create a new
profile is only for a test to see if the problem is related to the corrupt
profile of Outlook. Creating a new profile will not do any damage to the
old profile. Please refer to the following article to create a new profile
in Outlook.

If all fail, please help us collect more information so that we can do

1. Have you applied all the latest updates for Office 2003?
2. Does this occur on all the invitees that appear on the TO field when you
edit the meeting request?
3. Please take a screenshot on what exactly the user has received.

1. When this error message appears, press PrScrn key on your keyboard.
2. Type "mspaint" (without the quotation marks) in Start>Run box and click
OK.
3. Click Edit>Paste to paste the screenshot.
4. Save it as JPEG file type and send it as Email attachment.

Hi Leon,

I have done the following:

1. Ran Outlook in safe mode on both the sender's computer(computer A) as
well as the invitee's computer (computer B). This did not fix the problem. I
then restarted Outlook and the problem was still present.
2. I then sent invitations to other people in our office (from computer A)
and they all received the invitations correctly, and where able to reply to
them.
3. I created another user on computer B and a corresponding Outlook mail
account. I then sent an invitation from Computer A to this new account on
Computer B. The same problem still persists. I am sending 2 screen shots to
you via your email address.

At this point it seems to be the machine (computer B). I will ensure that
patches are infact up to date. Short of that, I am thinking of re-imaging
Computer B and then loading the .pst file into the freshly installed setup.

Comments? I'd really like to NOT have to re-install, but this user must be
able to receive and respond to these invitations, it is critical.

Thanks for your screenshots. By reviewing them, I think some key components
of Outlook application on this machine may be damaged. Please try the
suggestions below in the order they are provided:

* Suggestion 1: Repair Office

1. Click Start>Control Panel
2. Double click Add / Remove Programs, and highlight Microsoft Office 2003,
then click Change.
3. Choose Reinstall or Repair then click Next.
4. Choose Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation then click
Install.

If this does not work, you may have to reinstall Office 2003. Please follow
the steps below to perform a clean remove then reinstall.

* Clean remove of Office 2003

1. Quit all running programs.
2. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

8. Click Start>Run, type "%Temp%" (without the quotation marks) in the
Open box and press Enter. Delete all the files and folders within it. If
there are some files which cannot be deleted, just leave them alone and
this will not affect the result.
9. Empty the Recycle Bin.
10. To remove MAPI, search for and rename the following folders/files if
they exist:
C:\Windows\system32\mapi32.dll
C:\Windows\system32\mapisvc.inf
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Msmapi
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi
11. Restart your computer and install Office 2003 again.

Update on this issue:

I've followed your instructions/suggestions from your last post to a "t".
Unfortunately, it did not resolve the problem. At this point, I actually
copied the user's .pst file to another computer to see if it was more of an
OS problem. It ran fine from the other computer (Win XP Pro). I have since
re-imaged the computer in question, and then imported the .pst file for the
user. This has resolved the problem. However, in doing so, I am now facing
another problem.

The mail/contacts etc are all present, but the address book link is broken
when I try to address a new email. Clearly, in the process of importing,
that link was broken. I've explained the process I used to import the user's
..pst file below:

Instead of 'importing' the .pst file into the users new profile on the
re-imaged computer, I logged the user in on the machine, setup Outlook, then
simply 'copied' the user's "outlook" folder from: Document and
settings/"user"/local settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook.

I will try to 'import' the .pst file directly into Outlook, using the import
utility.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

re-buiding the whole system and now you are facing another "address book
link" issue, isn't it?
