Outlook and Earthlink

Using Windows XP (SP2 installed) Outlook is having
difficulty downloading/receiving email from an
Earthlink.net email account. Sends just fine, but when it
comes to receiving it gets a couple of emails into the
process and goes out to lunch.

Outlook ends up not responding, the send/receive agent
ends up not responding and the only way to get them to
shut down is via the task manager.

Any suggestions?

Your inference here is that Outlook (version unknown since you didn't
identify it) fails to retrieve from Earthlink but does work okay with
other e-mail providers or when using a different Internet provider. So
Outlook fails when retrieving from their e-mail server but succeeds when
using some other e-mail provider?

Did you use the webmail interface to clear out any e-mails that are
currently in your mailbox and then send new test e-mails to check again?
Sometimes an e-mail will screw up the mail server so that it refuses to
complete the sending of the message in the RETR command. You might see
a couple e-mails get yanked okay and then the e-mail client hangs
waiting for the data from the next RETR command (i.e., the mail server
hangs on trying to send that message). Use the webmail interface to
delete the problematic message and then retest using your e-mail client.

Have you tested after disabling e-mail scanning by your anti-virus
software?

Exit Outlook and wait a minute (to let and add-ons, like the Personal
Folders Backup, to complete their actions since they have to close
before Outlook can close). Then check in Task Manager if there is a
remanant instance of outlook.exe (and winword.exe if you were using it
as Outlook's e-mail editor). Kill them. Then restart Outlook and see
if it behaves correctly.

Do you have any anti-virus or anti-spam software installed that is scanning
the incoming messages? If so, disable that scan - it often seems to cause
problems...
