Outlook 2007 Inbox sort.

P

Papa Ski

I've just migrated to Outlook 2007.

When I highlight an item in the Inbox and click on the FROM field to sort,
the sort completes OK but the highlighted item is on the last line of the
screen.

Same happens in other folders.

How do I get highlighted item to top screen on sort of Outlook Inbox?

It doesn't matter whether you highlight an item or not. If you sort by date,
it depends by the item's date where it's being displayed.

Thanks for the response.

To clarify - I'm sorting the From field in the Inbox having selected (But
not opened) one item in single line mode - ungrouped. I usually do this when
I get a new e-mail and want to see all the e-mails from that particular
sender still in my Inbox.

In 2003 the sort would fill the screen from the top, allowing me to
instantly see all the e-mails from the sender on the screen.

In 2007 the sort works OK but the latest e-mail is presented on the last
line of the screen with all the previous e-mails from that sender down below,
forcing me to scroll.

I'm trying to find out if that is configurable back to 2003 way of doing
things.

Thanks,

Papa Ski

Sorry, I still don't understand what the problem is. By whatever field you
sort, you only can sort ascending or descending. If an item is sorted to the
bottom but you want it at the top, simply change the sort order.

If you want items of one sender grouped, I'd group by sender. Then you could
still sort by the received date.

Thanks again for looking at this and apologies if I'm not explaining my issue
very well.

This issue is not specifically about the sort itself (which works) but more
about how the sorted info is displayed on the screen. I'll try to explain by
describing two scenarios, one which receives differing results between 2003
and 2007 and the other gets the same outcome.

#1 In 2003, I'm in the Inbox which is sorted by date in descending order,
with the newest e-mail at the top from Smith, John. If I click on the email
and then click on the From field, the inbox is sorted OK and the latest
e-mail from Smith, John remains at the top line of the Inbox screen, followed
immediately by the other mails from Smith, John in date descending order so
the e-mails are all visible on the screen. This is handy for tracking an
ongoing e-mail conversation.

#2 in 2003, if I'm in the Inbox and click on the From field to sort by name
and type S, I'll be brought to the the senders begininning with S, with the
first one at the top of the screen.

Now over to 2007....

#1 in 2007 the same action has different results - when I click on the email
and then click on the From field, the inbox is sorted OK and the latest
e-mail from Smith, John is displayed on THE LAST LINE of the SCREEN, followed
immediately by the other mails from Smith, John in date descending order,
requiring me to scroll down to see any more e-mails from Smith, John. So 2003
throws the latest e-mail to the top line of the Inbox screen and 2007 moves
the latest e-mail from Smith, john TO THE LAST LINE of the screen.

#2 in 2007 works the same as 2003, which is great.

The fact that scenario #2 works the same in both 2003 and 2007 made me
wonder if the change in scenario #1 is configurable.

I use scenario #1 a lot so I'm trying to find out if the ability to get the
2007 sort to fill from the top line of the Inbox screen in the same way as
2003 did.

I appreciate your help and patience.

Thanks.

If I understand you correctly, this should work;

1. Place curser over "From" heading
2. Right-click
3. Select "Arrange By ..."
4. Choose "FROM"
5. Scroll down to (sender's name"
6. All emails from "sender's name" should be together by date

OR

download Xnobi, a free add-in which is fantastic.(www.xobni.com)
1. Click on "sender's name"
2. Xnobil pulls every email, and attachments ever sent or received in a pannel on the side of outlook.

Hi guys,
I want to add one more scenario:
Try to mark (select) couple or few mails in your inbox in Outlook 2003 and
re-sort the mailbox using another field as order field. Like example sort
them by date, mark recent 2 or 3 and sort them by subject. You will get 2 or
3 selected mails into entire mailbox at completely different places if the
cubject of all of them is different, but they will remain selected.
Now try this with outlook 2007.
you will see that mails are not only NOT selected anymore, but most probably
you will be pointed to another completely different mail that you never
touched/selected/used before. Even more... if you select one mail in outlook
2007 and reorder mailbox using another feeld as sort criteria you will be
moved to another mail (sometimes happens) without reason and focus of your
marker will be changed.
Once you have hundred mails per day and you need to read/select entire
communication for long period this makes you to resort and re-select and
sometimes search in between mailbox where is your mails located. This lose me
so much time during the day, that I started work few more hours to have my
job completed after office hours.

problem child

I know your post is severl years old. I just recently started using outlook 2007 myself and ran into the same issue with the sort on from, when highlighting an email, clicking on from, resulting in the sort for that sender ending up at the bottom of the page. very anoying. And i have not seen anyone post anything usful for your issue.

I have not found a solution for the problem but i do have a work around. posibibly the way sort is intended to function on the newer versions of outlook.

If the email you want to sort on is from "John Smith" you can just click on the "from" column, this sorts on what ever, then start typing out john smith, without too much delay between charactors, and the sort will properly be performed without doing anything else <period>. you need to type at least two charactors, maybe more if you have emails from several individuals with from starting with John.
