[Outlook 2007 b2]New mail icon (envelope) not displayed in tray?

I can't get that envelope to show in tray when new messages have arrived.
Display alerts works fine, but not the envelope.
Is this a known bug?

It will only display for messages delivered in your Inbox folder. It won't
display for messages you move by using a rule. You can however specify in
your rule to alo display the envelope or create a generic rule (without any
conditions) to display an envelope when a message is received.

Ok, thanks! This is new behavior, right? As I remember in Outlook 2003 the
envelope was always displayed for new mails, regardless of folder.

Yes, for Outlook use with a pst-file and no for Outlook use with an Exchange
mailbox ;-)

When you create a generic rule you might also want to consider adding;
-sound
-New Mail Desktop Alert
-New Item Alert Window

I bet you'll never miss having a new mail now :-D

THis might sound like a stupid question, but where in the rules can I select
to display the envelope icon as you sugested? I found all the other items,
but just that one I cannot seem to find...

Hi all. I'm in the same situation (Outlook 2007 b2) and i need the envelope
for all the messages i receive (ALL moved in folders by rules, nothing in
Inbox) but i can't find how to create a general rule for it, i mean in the
rules options there is no 'envelope' voice.
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Luca

Hi,
I am in the same situation too. And that solution with "New Item Alert
Window" instead of ENVELOPE in tray is VERY, VERY, VERY STUPID!!!!!

I HOPE that ms will correct this in the next "built" of Office 2007..... Or
there should be an option "Show an envelope in the notification area" in the
RULES options....

Tools, Options, E-mail Options, Advanced Email Options, Show an envelope
icon in the notification area is the option to switch on or off the
envelope.
It will only display the envelope notification though for your default
store Inbox.

Surely Patric, but we talk here about situation when you move all your emails
from exchange inbox to PST folders by rule when they arrive... This worked in
2003 but 2007 does not show envelope.. understand?

Setting you describe works just for default inbox as you wrote.

Hi Martin,

Yes I perfectly understand and I honestly don't know what you could do
to change this behavior. It seems that Outlook 2007 moves the messages
before the notification can be triggered. I don't have Exchange or use
rules extensively. I hope someone who does knows anything about this
issue.

Allow me to weigh in with bascially the same problem that the first post for
this thread raised.

I'm using the Beta 2 version of Outlook 2007. I'm running under XP
Professional and using Outlook Connector to receive my e-mails (my account is
with MSN.com). I too, am unable to receive an audio or envelope "heads up"
notifying me that I have received a new e-mail.

I have done the following to set up these options: Outlook/Tools/E-Mail
Options/Advanced E-Mail Options and checking "When New Items Arrive In My
Mailbox"/"Play A Sound" & "Show An Envelope Icon In The Notification Area".

I've noticed that when I make these selections and back out of all the
menus, the various "OK" buttons are "clickable", but the last menu
("Options") does not provide access to the "Apply" button, just the "OK
button. Could that be a factor? I've got sounds galore in other OS and
Office functions but no joy in Outlook as far as notification is concerned.
FWIW, when I was using Outlook 2003, I received the audio and envelope
notifications just fine.

I have also right clicked on the system tray and chosen "customize
notifications". Upon doing so, the window that pops up indicates under "Past
Items" that I have selected "You Have New Unopened Items" and set it for
"Always Show". Ditto for the "Volume Icon".

Other than write it off as a bug in the Beta version, I'm stymied as to what
to do next.

Hi All,

Well I am still yet to find a solution, but I just wanted to let you know it
does not matter if it is either an exchange mail server or a POP3 account.
(I have 2 profiles configured 1 is exchange, and one is for POP3 accounts
that I have.) Either way when my rules are running I will not get these
notifications.

Biggest issue I think with this new version (minor issues with the inking
within emails but that is a different topic). Besides the fact that if you
try to "Check for updates" from the help menu in office (Using Microsoft
Update), Office 2007 is not detected on your system.

I hope someone finds a fix/hack.

For everyone posting in this thread: Does this only happen when you have
rules running or is anyone seeing this without rules?
I have no rules running and see the envelope notification just fine.
I'll try and see if I can reproduce the problem with rules.

Office 2007 is beta. Hence it is not supported via Microsoft Update. In
fact, it is not supported by Microsoft at all. This shouldn't be a
surprise as it tells you this when you download it.

Patrick,

I may missed the rest of this thread. Were you able to produce this
problem? FWIW, I am running rules now and do not get a audio or visual cue
that a new e-mail has arrived though I've set Outlook 2007 to do so.

Only those messages that I have set up as "junk". The rest show up in the
inbox without any notification.

I'd say test with the next beta release again. Even though MS hasn't
announced yet when it will be available, it can't be that much longer
anymore. B2 came out a while ago after all.

You will be waiting forever for that one ;)
There won't be a Beta 3. The next release will be called Beta 2
Technical Refresh, followed by at least one Release Candidate. According
to a news story I read, the Release Candiate(s) will not be offered to
the public, but only to private beta testers.

I had the same problem. If you are using a hotmail account for example, you need to change the default data file in >Options>tab-Mail Setup>Data Files.
