Outlook 2007 B2 Hangs When Accessing IMAP

Ooutlook 2007 B2 is hanging repeatedly upon opening when trying to access my
IMAP folders from server. I have to kill process, open Outlook in safe mode
and it works. This will function for 2 or 3 more openings of Outlook then
safe mode hangs! It then asks if I want to use detect and repair, which I do,
and all is better. After about 10 starts of the repaired Outlook this whole
thing happens again. Is my data file getting corrupted?

I just reinstalled my entire OS, WinXP Pro, with all updates. It is a clean
system, and I installed Office 2007 B2 and One Note. I do have my outlook
data file in a new location, but that never caused trouble before.

I don't know if my Outlook 2007 B2 is "hanging", but it sure is slow as heck
opening up my email messages, which are IMAP in nature. Sure hope Microsoft
speeds things up before the final release. If they don't....well, let's not
go there...

How big is your IMAP account? Has it fully downloaded itself already?

I'm seeing the same thing when opening an unread message in an IMAP account.
The send/recieve icon appears in the task bar and outlook is unresponsive. I
have to close it down and then reopen it to read the message which is now
stated as read even though no message window opened (I do not use the preview
function).

This is very annoying and lets hope it gets fixed soon!

Hi John,

What happens if you leave Outlook just running for a while?
When you click on an IMAP item for which it only has downloaded the
header so far (you see the little header symbol in the message list),
Outlook downloads the actual item right then.

To everyone who posted in this thread: Are your IMAP items downloaded at
the time you click them or not?

Hi Patrick

The problem of outlook freezing only occurs with unread messages and makes
no difference whether send / recieve has completed or not. Opening messages
marked as read is quick and causes no problems (whether send recieve has
finished or not!). If i mark an unread message as read and then open it I
don't have a problem.

My IMAP account is 20mb in size and i'm using about half of it. I have a 2mb
broadband connection.

I do half mcafee virus scan installed but the email scanner is disabled,
although clicking on the mcafee icon within outlook does cause outlook to
crash and generate an error report.

Hi John,

Can you switch off send/receive? You still will get your new IMAP
messages while the folder Inbox is open due to how IMAP works.
Switch if off and see if that makes any difference.

Hi Patrick

I have disabled send and recieve for my IMAP account (I still have it
enabled for another account that is working fine) and this makes no
difference.

Any add-ins running according to tools, trust-center, add-ins? If yes,
disable them (except the VBA one).
Do you know what IMAP server it is?

I had the addins mobile service and search enabled. disabling these had no
effect.
I'm unsure what the IMAP server is (I might be able to find out tomorrow).
The server is imap.sheffield.ac.uk. brief details (and contact details for
the administrators) can be found at http://www.shef.ac.uk/cics/services/email

I am still having problems with outlook hanging when I access an unread
message on my IMAP account. Are there any solutions or suggestions available?

Nope, its just the same. It hangs upon opening an unread message, but it
reads previously read messages without a problem
