My excel email attachments are being received either as
winmail.dat or as unknown. This seems to happening
mainly with aol email addresses. In talking with AOL,
they said that it is outlook or outlook express that is
changing the email attachment and the settings need to
changed. However, they could not tell what the setting
need to be and I can't find anything in the knowledge
base at microsoft.com that addresses this issue. Does
anybody know the answer?

Send using plain text. Stop using Outlook Rich Text Format that creates the
winmail.dat file to contain the formatting in clients that don't read RTF.

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.


After a lot of head-scratching, (e-mail address removed) asked:
