Outlook 2003 and IMAP Accounts

Ok, here's something that has always confused/frustrated me: I've just set
up
Outlook 2003 on a new PC with my hosted Exchange account, then added in my
four IMAP accounts. No other settings were changed, so everything is
default. I've
added each of the IMAP inboxes as "Favorite Folders".

Here's the problem: it doesn't check for email until I click into the Inbox
via the Favorites Folder. I get no bolded numbers showing me new email
messages. Once I've clicked on each inbox once, it seems to show that inbox
"live" for the rest of that Outlook session.

Before I started randomly mucking with send/receive settings and whatnot, I
thought I'd ask here if there was a "best practices" way of configuring
Outlook 2003 for my particular scenario. Thanks for any insight. :)

Are the IMAP accounts included in the Send/Receive group?

Are the IMAP accounts included in the Send/Receive group?

Yes, they are - the Inbox of each IMAP account is selected when I drill down
into the "All Accounts" Send/Receive group. I do notice that the "Schedule
an automatic send/receive every x minutes" is NOT checked off. I've now
checked that off, but it seems bizarre that I should have to specify
that...is this a bug/oversight when it comes to IMAP accounts?

In general, Outlook will refresh IMAP folders only when you open them. I
believe that you have to tell Outlook to touch the IMAP folders (via the
option you mention) if you want them refreshed otherwise. In the
send/receive group you can tell Outlook which folders it should keep up to
date.

That seems rather short-sighted of the Outlook team, but given what I've
seen on the Inbox Mobile team (I'm a Windows Mobile MVP) when it comes to
IMAP, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. ;-) Thanks for your help Brian!
