Outlook 2000 slow response, busy, unresponsive, freeze

Hello,

I'd set up a brand new laptop running XP with office 2000 and Outlook
2000 is running slow. It seems that every 30 seconds Outlook will
freeze up for about 2-3 seconds at a time. When this happens, I can't
open up emails or navigate through the system until that 2-3 second
pause is over. When I type a new email, it will freeze up for the 2-3
seconds, which prevents me from being able to type emails without
having to wait for it to unfreeze and have the text catchup to where I
am typing.

It seems to be only an Outlook thing for the rest of the computer seems
to be working fine. It seems that every 30 seconds or so, it is
downloading or running something (which is the cause of this hiccup),
but I've changed the settings to download messages every 10 minutes. I
had a large PST file open (over 1.5 GB), but the problem still occurs
even after I closed the PST file.

The outlook profile is set up to recieve POP email and have it
downloaded into the computer. The large PST file is located on the
desktop. So, it is not connected to a Exchange server. I'd ran detect
and repair on outlook a couple of times, uninstalled and reinstalled
office a few times, and also did a repair of office a few times and the
same problems keeps happening.

I am running AVG 7.5 on the laptop. I turned off email scanning and
the problem still happens.

Is anyone familiar with this problem and know how I can go about fixing
it?

Thank you.

Firstly OL2k has a pst size limitation of 2gb, however problems can occur
from 1.6gb.
You should immediately split/archive the pst into more manageble sizes
before the pst becomes corrupt and you lose data.

Once that is done you can move on to the freeze problem

I have no problems opening up the large PST. That's fine, and I have
closed it and am strictly just working in my "outlook.pst" file. This
is well below 1 GB and the freeze problem still happens.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Anything shown in Events Viewer
What polling interval do you have set?
What addins installed?

Nothing shown in the events viewer.

I had the polling interval set at 10 minutes, then turned that off.

No addins installed.

all right, i uninstalled it and set everything up again. everything
seems to be working fine without the glitch UNTIL i started to import
my old emails and contacts into them. I've tried to have only my
contact imported and the problem still exists. i don't care about the
emails being imported into the new inbox i've created but i don't want
to enter in all my contacts again. any ideas?

thanks.

Then it would appear the problem is with your old pst and/or its contents.
FYI You should never Import or Export a pst, with a clean/new pst, open your
old pst within OL and copy data from old to new.

All right, I was able to pinpoint the problem to one of the contacts,
but I'm not sure which one. There are a couple hundred contacts in the
folder and it is difficult to discern which one is the culprit.

I've tried to move the contact from the old pst to the new one and the
problem still exists. I've also tried copying the contacts over to the
new pst, same thing.

Until I'm able to figure out which contact is the culprit, I will have
to rebuild my contact list manually.

Thanks for your help.
