Outlook 2000 Missing MPR.dll Errors with Win XP Home Edition

Steve

I recently got a new computer and bit the bullet to move to XP after
loving Win 98 for too long. LOL I installed my same Outlook 2000 SR-1
(9.0.0.3821), attached to my PST files, and all went well for a few
days. Last night I started getting 2 errors:

1. "Outlook.Exe Entry Point Not Found. The procedure entry point
WNetEnumCache Passowords could not be located in the library MPR.dll"

After I clicked "OK" things continued to look ok till I got this
messagewhen I tried to export my PST file in case I needed to reinstall
Outlook:

2. WAB Notification Window: OUTLOOK.EXE - Entry Point Not Found. The
procedure entry point WNetEnumCachedPasswords could not be located in
the dynamic link library MPR.dll.

It seems that I have lost the library MPR.dll? I tried repairing
Outlook from within Outlook and that did not help. Then I removed and
reinstalled Office and that did not help. My suspicion is that the
removal did not remove everything (especially since my PST file folders
were still there when I restarted). In Win98 I would have removed
Outlook in safe mode - is there a corresponding procedure in Win XP
Home? Or is there another problem?

Any help appreciated!

Sounds like you've got the wrong MAPI32.DLL on your system. I'm not sure but
can you do a Detect & Repair operation on OL2000? Look on the Help menu

Hi Vince!

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did a Detect and Repair as my first
attempt at resolving the issue. It said that everything was OK, but
during the time that the Detect and Repair was running I got an error
that was similar to the one I got when I tried to export the Contact
list. So, it sounds like that did not really run correctly.

However, when I first installed Outlook, all was working well, and I
Imported my old messages and contact list to get started. So what ever
the reason is for my problem, it "happened" after I had Outlook up and
running. I thought in fact that maybe some error took place when I
booted the computer before I had the error, and I rebooted to see if
that fixed it. (The old "kick it to fix it" approach. LOL)

As I write this, I suspect that I am so new to XP (like 4 days now)
that I really need to learn how to completely remove a program so that
during reinstallation the setup program will actually put all new files
on the hard drive. If there was a way to be sure that Outlook was
completely removed from the machine, I suspect that I could reinstall
it and it work.

Sorry to be so dumb on this!

Do me a favor & check how many MAPI32.DLL files you've got on your system

Good Morning Vince!

I am sorry to be so slow in responding - been hectic here. As I
continued my "trial and error approach" to fixing things, I removed
Outlook again, but deleted the files that remained on the drive. When I
reloaded Outlook, I got a message that mapi32.dll was missing. I had
read your reply by then, and I followed up on your question and found
one mapi32.dll in c:\program files\common files\system\mapi\1033\nt
plus one more in folder c:\windows\system32. When I reread some of the
MS KB messages on the problems with mapi32.dll and saw that in some
cases that can mean that the file is corrupted, I followed the
suggestion in the message and renamed the file in the system 32 folder
to mapi32.old. When I rebooted and started Outlook, it all worked well.
I can not explain it, but it works fine now. Does any of that make
sense?

Thanks for our help Vince!

Steve
