Outlook 2000 hangs on exit

Starting a few months ago, Outlook 2000 suddenly began to hang on exit,
leaving Outlook and MAPISP32 running after being connected to my corporate
Exchange server account via Nortel Contivity VPN connection. Forcing Outlook
closed in Task Manager is the only way to resolve that state, short of
shutting down the PC.

This is a standard Dell Dimension 8100. At the time this problem emerged, I
was running Windows ME with Office 2000 Pro. The change in behavior may have
happened at the time I ran a series of Office 2000 updates and patches.
Detect and Repair has had no effect.

Yesterday I flattened / reloaded the box with Windows XP Pro v2002 SP2, and
ran the available updates and patches. Then I installed the Office 2000 Pro
and the available updates and patches. The behavior of Outlook is completely
unchanged in this new environment; i.e. it still hangs on exit.

For troubleshooting, I set up a POP3 profile to my Comcast account, and
Outlook operated and exited normally. I also started the Exchange server
profile, but without first establishing the VPN connection. As expected, it
popped dialog boxes about being unable to display my folders, and went into
offline mode. Again I was able to exit the application normally.

The hang apparently only occurs after the client has actually established a
connection to the Exchange server. It does not alter the outcome to kill the
VPN connection before closing Outlook.

This appears to be purely an Outlook client issue, and I cannot find
anything about it in the KB. I am not intimately familiar with the corporate
server-side configuration.
