Outlook 2000 - Attachment Problems

I recently purchased a new computer with Windows XP and
loaded my Office 2000 software. All seemed to work well
until I created an additional email account for my wife.
The new email account takes all of the attachments sent
(pdf files, dwg files, etc...) and converts them into dat
files which nobody is able to open. I have tried to
trouble shoot the account and software and am at a loss.
