outline numbering does not appear in my master document

Hi! I am writing a thesis with 9 subdocuments in a Master document. All
headings of each subdocument I have given the standard heading style with
outline numbering to. When I open the master document, however, no numbering
appears in front of my headings (although the Master recognizes the heading
levels). I have to go through the entire format, bullets and numbering,
outline, heading process for each heading, then it works. Is there a way to
do this for the entire document at once? It worked in the past for me but now
I am using Word 2003 and it's stopped working. Please help, my deadline is
fast approaching!
Thanks a lot!

Word experts generally advise combining long documents into one file, if

Thanks Daiya, the links were very interesting (and all in my Favourites now)
and my Master is, for the moment, behaving reasonably well, but I still have
to change each heading by hand. However, now these changes do not go away on
every close! Yea!
Thanks again! Isabella
