out of office reply - error 'cannot reply to message'

I use Outlook 2007 but am not on microsoft Exchange. I have tried to set up
an out of office reply using the advice given in
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA102487481033.aspx?WT.mc_id=42 but
it won't work. The actions I selected were 'where my name is in to to and cc
box' and 'sent only to me'. It just comes up with an error message 'cannot
reply to message'. I have seen another post where someone had a similar
problem and a suggested answer was to remove the latest security update. I
am reluctant to do this if it's not necessary but, if it is, how do I do it
and what weaknesses would it expose in security? Do hope someone can help
me. I've tried very hard to find answers on the web and in support forums
but am feeling very frustrated now!

A better option may be to use the Vacation message that many ISPs offer to
their clients. Check with your ISP to see if they offer this option.

Using Rules to send an Out of Office Message has many limitations, the worst
of which is to leave Outlook always open and connected to the Internet.
Oops, not the worst, the worst is to generate a mail loop that will bring
Outlook down to its knees, as well as your mail account storage limit.

My ISP does not allow me to do a vacation message. What security update is
making this a problem?

What did the post to which you referred in your original post cite as the
security update?

I would be wary of uninstalling a security update solely to be able to send
out a "vacation message."
