YW & thanks for your feedback.

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender support
and comments.

TIP: Access these newsgroups using your default newsreader, not your

Everything OK now, thanks. Got it running with different AV suite, no
virus
detected. Thoroughly up-to-date with SP2 and SP3. Slight problem with
Defender, but I'll look at relevant posts for that now. I'll try Spybot
again later on.

What did the shop do, supposedly? Yes, take it back to the shop
immediately. If they give you any bunk, cancel the check or contest the
charge with your credit card company.

You should not accept the return of the machine unless you see it working
OK while you're still in the shop.
Sorry, PA; lost this thread for a couple of days. Got PC back with full
backup of files I wanted. Then tried again to get into it. Even in
SAFE
MODE I cannot get windows to open, nor use the original XP installation
disk
to start over. Guess I'll have to go back to them again - what's money
problems when I'll get peace of mind, knowing wifie will stop getting on
at
me about when she can get back on the net again!

:
1. Make certain the tech formats & does a clean install of Windows, not
a
Repair Install, and gets the machine fully patched at Windows Update,
including getting SP3 installed, before returning it to you.

2. Make VERY sure the tech uses either the CDs that came with the
machine
or the hidden Recovery partition to do the clean install.

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3) and *only until* 14

Not sure. I think I clicked once on the title to tick then bin it,
but
I
then thought I had inadvertantly double-clicked (you know how fingers
seem
to have a mind of their own at the wrong moment?), so logged out
quickly
then virus-scanned but nothing was picked up. Anway I've taken PC to
a
store who'll look at it and transfer latest data onto DVD before I
re-install XP. Sorry for delay, been working nights and using work PC
for
this and searching about any Spybot problems.
Another question: I have downloaded XP SP3 but not yet installed it;
are
there any reported problems with it? Will download again once PC is
sorted.

:

Did you open this "dodgy e-mail"?

Hi. I installed Spybot 1.6.2 last night. I'm not sure what
happened
but
my
Dell PC started slowing down. I shut it down, waited, restarted.
Now
it
starts, then goes straight into standby mode - when I press the user
name
to
start the PC goes straight back to standby mode.
Previously I had run MacAfee AV, Windows Defender then Spybot, for
which
I
elected to get an update first as I hadn't had one for a while.
Mind you, just before the AV sweep, I saw what looked like a dodgy
e-mail
in
Hotmail (probably from China??) so got out, shut down then did the
sweep.
Hope I didn't get anything to cause this. Or had Spybot done
something
to
the Registry (I saw something flash about that at the corner of me
eye)?
