OT: Sypbot 1.6.2 Update

R

R. McCarty

Seems like a wave of new program updates over the past few days.
Java 1.6 Update #12, Malwarebytes 1.34 and Spybot 1.6.2. Note
that Spybot ( if updated over existing version ) will post some retry
errors and you may see several Registry Key changes fail. I've also
seen a .Dll replacement fail on a couple of machines. Users might be
advised to not update Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6.2 until these
install/upgrade issues are resolved.

If anyone else has attempted to upgrade, I'd appreciate knowing if
you also experienced issues with Version 1.6.2.

No problems on two machines.

Thanks - maybe I have a corrupted download (?) Will retry and
advise.

On one of the machines the update flaked out and then it told me there
were no new updates. So I downloaded the program and installed it over
the old one and it works just fine with no error messages during the
install. Sorry I didn't mention that.

I updated 2 machines that got the errors about not being able to
overwrite existing files. I chose to ignore, after the reboot Spybot
seemed to work OK.

It'd be a very good idea to uninstall your current version of Spybot before
installing the new one.

Before you do, however, you must Undo all Immunizations. And if you have
Tea Timer enabled, I'd recommend fully disabling it before uninstalling
Spybot, too. See http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=32409

NB: If you don't fully understand what Tea Timer does and how it does it, it
may be best to leave it permanently disabled.

False. I updated a few dozen computers and no problems installing it
over the old one.

I updated on with no issues on an Acer Desktop running
XP SP2. I did have to download all new data files after
the install over the prior version.

Is this the free version being upgraded?
I have V. 1.6.0.31 free - used it last night and tonight - checked for
updates - none offered and certainly no offer to upgrade to 1.6.2.

Version 1.6.2 available here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Over the day, I've updated 9 machines. All had version 1.6.0 on
them and besides the 3 modules that seem to require a "Retry"
all updated and have run scans.

Only thing I may do differently than a standard install is to
omit the Tea Timer component and "Skins" to be installed.

I did the upgrade this morning. I had v1.6 and the update check
reported that there was a new v1.6.2 available. I kicked off
the download which was painfully slow - over 40 minutes for a
16Mb file is unusual for my 1.5M/256K DSL line.

The update finally completed and the installation commenced. I
saw a number of these file update failures because the file is
marked read-only but they seemed to work when the retry button
was clicked. Then I struck one that the retry button didn't
work for. I noticed that Spybot and the update screens were
both open as well so I closed them and clicked on the retry
button and it worked. The installation went to completion.

I was a bit concerned about the need for the retries so I clicked
on the upgrade icon again. This time there were no problems and
it went straight through to completion.

It looks like the best solution is to close the Spybot and update
windows before running the upgrade.

...or just go to the file it mentiuons and change the permissions.

Hi. I installed Spybot 1.6.2 last night. I'm not sure what happened but my
Dell PC started slowing down. I shut it down, waited, restarted. Now it
starts, then goes straight into standby mode - when I press the user name to
start the PC goes straight back to standby mode.
Previously I had run MacAfee AV, Windows Defender then Spybot, for which I
elected to get an update first as I hadn't had one for a while.
Mind you, just before the AV sweep, I saw what looked like a dodgy e-mail in
Hotmail (probably from China??) so got out, shut down then did the sweep.
Hope I didn't get anything to cause this. Or had Spybot done something to
the Registry (I saw something flash about that at the corner of me eye)?

Not sure. I think I clicked once on the title to tick then bin it, but I
then thought I had inadvertantly double-clicked (you know how fingers seem to
have a mind of their own at the wrong moment?), so logged out quickly then
virus-scanned but nothing was picked up. Anway I've taken PC to a store
who'll look at it and transfer latest data onto DVD before I re-install XP.
Sorry for delay, been working nights and using work PC for this and
searching about any Spybot problems.
Another question: I have downloaded XP SP3 but not yet installed it; are
there any reported problems with it? Will download again once PC is sorted.

1. Make certain the tech formats & does a clean install of Windows, not a
Repair Install, and gets the machine fully patched at Windows Update,
including getting SP3 installed, before returning it to you.

2. Make VERY sure the tech uses either the CDs that came with the machine or
the hidden Recovery partition to do the clean install.

Sorry, PA; lost this thread for a couple of days. Got PC back with full
backup of files I wanted. Then tried again to get into it. Even in SAFE
MODE I cannot get windows to open, nor use the original XP installation disk
to start over. Guess I'll have to go back to them again - what's money
problems when I'll get peace of mind, knowing wifie will stop getting on at
me about when she can get back on the net again!

What did the shop do, supposedly? Yes, take it back to the shop
immediately. If they give you any bunk, cancel the check or contest the
charge with your credit card company.

You should not accept the return of the machine unless you see it working OK
while you're still in the shop.

Everything OK now, thanks. Got it running with different AV suite, no virus
detected. Thoroughly up-to-date with SP2 and SP3. Slight problem with
Defender, but I'll look at relevant posts for that now. I'll try Spybot again
later on.
