Just a mini-survey really.

Given that we appear to have some major sleuths on this newsgroup,
what's everyone using as their search engine these days?

I used to think Google was the bees knees, but recently I've been
getting teed off with vast numbers of hits that just refer to other
search sites. A right pain when you're trying to track down a
specialist freeware app!

dogpile.com and mamma.com

They're both meta engines, but way better than the likes of google, yahoo
etc.

Yeah, Google is blowing it big time letting those sites manipulate their
technology like that.

Besides Google and Alltheweb I use Vivisimo quite a bit.

I still think Google is the best one currently available.

I've been using Google since they were hosted at Stanford.
http://www-db.stanford.edu/~backrub/google.html

You can get better results using Google's Advanced Operators.
http://www.google.com/help/operators.html

Google Guide is another good site to learn how to use Google.
http://www.googleguide.com/

Still, Google is not going to be a magic cure-all for searching the web.
Don't rely on *one* search utility to find what you need.

Google is very popular and many people have learned how to exploit its
weaknesses. It is just a tool for people to use, though. A hammer can
build or it can destroy, it depends on who's using it.

I still use Mainly Google
For second opinions, I use Altavista to (most of the time) get other results
The big advantage is that both Google and Altavista can use the same sysntax
for most queries.

I also have started to use microsoft's MSN. Not my favorite, but it produces
a lot of results, thanks to al those people who never taak the time or don't
know how to change Internet Explo(r/d)ers search engine and start page.

I also have some 'secondairy' search engines for the odd times I realy need
to find something exotical:

Ilse.nl
infoseek.com
ask.com (Jeeves)
go.com
a whole bunch of other once-proud-and-fierce search engines.

Real meta search engines I hardly use. Pure psychological...

Some interesting replies so far - I'm glad it's not just me that's
noticed the spamming of Google.

I usually always use the advanced options - but more and more I'm
finding it necessary to bung in lots of 'NOT' exclusions to help weed
out the dross.

Found an interesting one,
http://www.1banana.com/c/1b.pl
has a direct search of the newsgroups built in, along with an image
search.

Keep 'em coming!

a9 *is* Google.

In addition to Google I like http://www.gigablast.com/ and
http://vivisimo.com/ . Not that there's a great lot of difference
between some of these other than format bells & whistles, but that can
be important for certain kinds of searches. Someone else has validly
noted that the metasearch sites are good bets, and to that list I'd add
http://www.killerinfo.com/ as best followed by http://www.ixquick.com/
and http://www.iboogie.com/ .

Been using it for years. I like it's version of boolean logic. To
avoid hits in non-English languages, I use this link instead:

I used to think Google was the bees knees, but recently I've been

I had a rant on uk.d-i-y last tuesday:-
Anyone else think it's getting b*** hard to find any products on
google now, all I get is organisations getting in the way, I want
suppliers and details, thank you very much, not everyone and his dog
getting in the way with search results that are full of other eejits
and _their_ dog's search engines .....grrrrr.
Which got one answer.....

"Wierd. I was preparing a post containing almost exactly the same rant
this afternoon. (I abandoned the post in the end when I found the answer
elsewhere)
Drives me nuts too.
If I get round to it I'll try and write myself a local wrapper for the
google site that could append a list of excluded sites to the search
terms...."

Anyone know about "writing a wrapper" it would suit me just to have a
sort of blacklist - shouldn't take too long to just add the monkey sites
as they show up.

That group suggested teoma, and Vivisimo, which I specially like the
clustered results in, but google still feels faster, pity about all the
trash it throws up, not so much for freeware but if you want to buy a
product and checks suppliers

well, Google is good, but AlltheWeb is also huge...but I keep coming
back to AltaVista a lot because I do many case-sensitive searches, and
AltaVista seems to be the only 'major' which still supports that. I
really don't understand why others don't.

one Banana seems to just be a comprehensive Meta-Search engine...but a
good one! I note that it says "Every Picture search displays random
pictures! "...which can be a wonderful feature to keep in mind, as what
I want is often on page 24...
