OT: OE Question

S

Steve Nielsen

Apologies in advance for being off topic.

I can't seem to find the appropriate forum for Outlook Express. I'm
using IE6 SP1 and have a newsreader question, there doesn't seem to be a
forum for IE6. Perhaps someone here knows the answer or at least can
direct me to the right forum to ask.

When I download a series of binaries from newsgroups I have to open each
one in order to save it to local disk. Is there some way in OE to select
multiple messages with binary attachments and save all the attachments?

Thanks
Steve

No. Bottom line: forget OE when using binary groups. Use
Forte Agent or another newsreader.

Hi Steve,

In O.E., highlight the whole group and then
choose from the menu bar, Message ->Combine and Decode
They will all come together.

The O.E.6 group is "microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.outlookexpress" (no quotes)

What Rick says is true... You need to be very careful with binaries, period.

Many of the items come with a price tag

Many of those giving things plant added code into them with everything from Trojan Horses to
programs added for them to use later. In those cases, most send out some packets when ever
the computer is at startup, and at time intervals to let servers now when you are online, so
they can d/l, u/l, or use your computer for a SPAM server, to having porno u/l onto it and
others d/l those off of it. It's a cruel world out there sometimes. But good luck , and make
it a good new year.

I think he's asking if he can do a Combine and Decode for more
than one segmented binary file. Not in OE.

BTW Happy New Year to you also, Don!

Right, I know how to combine and decode multiple segments like with an
MPEG or AVI spanning several messages for example, I was asking
specifically about doing a batch save as of JPEG files, although I did
not give that much detail. Guess there's no way in OE. I also use
Netscape messenger but there seems to be no way there either and I don't
care for how Netscape handles pictures. Oh well, off to look for another
news reader. :)

Thanks
and
Happy New Year folks!

Thanks Don. I am aware of the risks, am fairly well protected I believe
(firewall, good up to date a/v, antispyware, etc.) and I am quite
careful about what I do d/l. I appreciate the concern.

Forte Agent is great. It automatically combines file segments
on your display, so you don't need to go through and highlight
each piece, and unlike OE it'll also tell you if any of the segments
are missing or corrupt, so you don't waste time downloading
incomplete garbage.

Agent is well worth the shareware fee if you need yEnc capability,
or just use Free Agent if you don't need yEnc.
Thanks

Same to you, Steve!

Sure thing...

I found something the other day that helps where I don't ever get a hit out of AdAware any
more...

You should take a look at it.

First of all, I use Note Tab Light(free) in place of Notepad. It has a favorites feature
where you can open any file that's in it you want when the program opens; good for files
being worked on for a while. Second this site has a copy and paste that goes in your
"hosts" file. The site is http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/ . All you need to do is do a
search for "hosts". It is a file without an extension. You can point at Notepad to open it.
Copy out of the website, and paste it into "hosts" and it redirects tons of trouble causing
SPAM popups to redirect to 127.0.0.1, your own computer, so it never gets sent back to the
intended sites.

I think it is killer. Now I don't have very many bot scanners snooping around my rear (of
box) either

I've used Forte Agent in the past. I've also used another program I
think is called BNC NewsReaper which is pretty good and I actually like
better than Agent but for some reason it no longer works on my system
even afrer a couple of uninstall/reinstalls. It does yEnc, too.

Thanks,
Steve
