OT: MS Updates problem

T

Tim Clark

Does someone here know to whom i would report a problem with the latest
updates.

I went to the Office Update site and in addition to the Word and Excel
update i was offered :
Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB949074)

The link below will give you more information about it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...C4-5D43-44C3-95CC-949BA1ACA479&displaylang=en

It Failed to install, which i guess is a good thing, as I DO NOT HAVE OFFICE
2003, I have OFFICE 2000 !!!

I tried a second time and was offered the update again, again it failed.

I am not sure why the Office Update site would offer me updates to a product
I don't have, so I assume it is a glitch, but who do I tell ???

Since I know we have some official MS folks here I thought someone could
point me in the right direction.

?:)

I`ve been having similar probs with the Office 2007 trial I downloaded with
2003 already sitting on my machine. I`ve had more than my share since then -
for all modules which I`m sure is not right - B4 that seldom anything. OR it
needs a lot of patching which, in itself, is not encouraging if one is
evaluating. What I will say is that they sit quite happily together and I can
effortlessly switch between one and the other using the desktop shortcuts.
This was nearly impossible in the 2000 days . I`ll pay more attention to the
next lot of updates. I have been working on the principal that MS must be
well aware by now and that I`m just one of many. Maybe I shouldn`t be so
complacent

Engel My friend,

Thank you for the link.
I will suppose that if others are reporting the same problem that it is
being brought to MS's attention and will be addressed.

Again, thank you,
?:)

I've not read the rest of the thread yet.

Might you have a "reader" version for Office 2003 files installed?
Powepoint, Excel, Word, perhaps..

File name File version File size Date Time
Osecomca.dll 11.0.8238.0 172,432 11-Nov-2008 18:13

The above file may be the only change this patch puts in place. You might
search your machine to see if there is a file by that name, and whether it
is an earlier version, or that version now.

You can download this patch from this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...C4-5D43-44C3-95CC-949BA1ACA479&displaylang=en

and install it separately from any other patches--sometimes this will work
when the automatic installation hasn't. It will also create a
log---probably kb949074.log--which might have useful information about why
the installation is failing.

I've seldom (if ever?) seen detection be wrong in terms of being given a
patch which I don't need--it has been wrong the other way very
infrequently--but sometimes--i.e. the patch is needed on more systems than
originally detected by the AU/WU logic.

Bill, Nope,

No reader or compatibility pack that i am aware of or could find.
Osecomca.dll does not exist on my system.

As Engel's link points out, others are having this problem as well.
I will wait to see how this turns out before trying a manual install of a
patch I may not need :O

Keeping you posted Bill,
Just read thru the posts at the site linked to by Engel.
No change yet that I can find.
MS seems to be ignoring the problem :-(

Thanks - I'll see if I can find somebody with expertise in that area to ask
about this...
