Dud.

Just a couple of personal preferences.

"Servant Salamander - the best file manager." Prefer Total Commander any
day.
"ACDSee Classic - there is no subsitute." What's wrong with XNView?

Regards.

Maybe, but he did say FREEWARE, which excludes a SHAREWARE program
which you repeatedly urge upon people. I've heard all the stories
about how it doesn't stop working at the expiry of the trial period
and the nag-screen is bearable and so on.

Doesn't make any difference. The license is shareware. If we - or
anything we do in this group - are to retain any credibility it's time
we stopped recommending stealing shareware.

You're into lots of activities beyond my computing, but my first utility is always
2XExplorer. Don't want to open a big thread, but the triple view is my
preference. Also Startup Control Panel (Mike Lin) and Tweakui.

Freeware

K-LiteMegaCodecPack1.16
Media Player Classic

Can't remember if Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative are
included with the MegaPack or not, but they should definitely be part of
the mix.

You need to download/try SS2.5beta7 -smokes Total Commander IMNSHO.
Total Commander is good - no doubt SS is better ;-)

"ACDSee Classic - there is no subsitute." What's wrong with XNView?

XNView is excellent. I use IrfanView/ServantSalamander(F3) as my default
graphics viewer. ACDSee preloads graphic files and allows you to do a
slide show viewing 1mb photos @ 1/2 second intervals. Nothing else comes
close.

Agree - fortunately, both Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative as
well as Media Player Classic.

You are missing the freeware apps Agent Group Order, and AgtFind.

AGO allows you to reorder the subs groups list and also gives the
option to toggle a group into a folder so you can import a msg into a
ng.

http://www.gordol.org/agent.html
Durn! that's one I almost forgot. Can't live without AGO.
AgtFind is *much* faster than Ctrl+G and also allows for ng stats
generation.

http://pelegi.bei.t-online.de/agtfind1740.zip

Both are 'must have' Agent add ons
Never have tried AgtFind - downloading now.

thanks

I responded with my *personal* preference for Total Commander as Dud
included a *payware* (also flagged as OT) section and, therefore, felt it
deserved inclusion on that basis.
Had HE not done so, I would not have felt it appropriate to do so.
I DO have a liking for Total Commander, that much is true and obvious. I was
not aware of *repeatedly* urging it on people. "People" are absolutely able
to make up their own minds.
If you are angry, imagine how upset that makes me. :)

I'm not angry though I will confess to some exasperation. Barely a
day passes without discussion and recommendation of non-freeware
programs. Perhaps my use of the word "repeatedly" over-stated the
case; nonetheless, you have suggested it before, couched in terms that
suggested that non-expiring shareware was in some way equivalent to
freeware.

I am equally fond of Total Commander, having held a registered copy
for many years. I don't discuss it here. Of all the groups of
programs, the dual-pane file manager is probably the best represented
in freeware. There may be none quite so good as TC but that's
irrelevant - there is a a plethora of competent freeware programs of
this type to recommend and discuss.

If this group were about absolute quality - which it is not - we
would, arguably, talk about no bitmap editor other than Photoshop.
That's not what it's about, though. We deal with quality - or at
least adequacy for purpose - of freeware.

Any suggestion that freeware can be substituted with non-expiring
shareware sets alarm bells ringing, for me, because it goes to the
heart of what we're about. For the group to retain its high
reputation we must be scrupulous about the integrity of our advice.

At times I cringed at John Corliss's methods, much as I might agree
with his intentions. That he performed a valuable service here cannot
be doubted, given the growth in payware recommendation and debate
since he absented himself. I didn't think I would ever say that. I
was wrong.

But then this newsgroup wouldn't be any fun. Besides, debate is healthy.

Doesn't exist yet :)
Gaim1.1.1-InstantMessanger

I'd go for Miranda, think it's lighter on resources.
PhotoFiltre6.0.2

GIMP GIMP GIMP. But that's personal taste :)
For vector graphics, check out Inkscape (http//inkscape.org). It's a
mighty fine program, I believe everybody should check it out.

Ever seen Notepad2? I switched to it because it has block select
mode, Metapad unfortunately doesn't have that. But if you don't need
that, Metapad still remains a top choice.
