OT - did a fresh install of W2K

Work network problems on their usual cycle so I decided to pull a
computer out from the 'junkyard' and dial in to e-mail VIA a modem.
Problem is the computer decided to go into an infinite reboot so out
comes the W2K CD for a fresh install. Then SP-4 off another CD.
By then the network was back up and I did some of the critical
updates, then turn the computer off. Come Monday, network down again
so fire up the 'ole modem. I forgot all about disabling the windows
messenger service and got 3 dire registry warnings from the following
sites: RegistrycleanerXP, NowfixPC and Regfixit.com. Forgot all
about those pests :0)

It also means that the PC was NOT behind a FireWall appliance or at least a NAT Router.

If its was, you would never have received the NetBIOS Pop-Ups.

Correct - again this was just a quick fix to check work e-mail when
the network was down (again). I am going to install comodo firewall

The connection time on the Internet of an un-patched PC period of being infected has gotton
quite short. In the time you had it connected to the Internet and in the process of
obtaining the "46 remaining critical updates" could allow the PC to be exploited.

Actually I mistyped, it was 66 patches LOL. Installed Comodo and
tried to update windows but the network went down again after
downloading 20 of them. After several hours it was back up for 20
minutes, then down. Back up and I left the install running - on the
LAN it does have the workplace firewall, plus comodo so it should be
okay on that end. VIA the modem was worthless as when trying to
send an attachment through the workplace e-mail the system would
hang. So much for my backup plan.
