OT: Can't uninstall anti-virus software

Sorry for the OT post, but this is the one NG that I think can help me best.

A number of months ago I installed AVG anti-virus free edition. AVG's
authors will give NO tech support for the free edition. That's completely
understandable, however I can't get this thing off my computer! I can't
uninstall it. When I try to uninstall it, it just sits at the "removing from
system registry" process during the uninstall. I've let it go for hours and
it just sits there. The PC doesn't hang, as I am able to ctrl-alt-delete and
end the program manually so that I can get my PC back!

I've tried everything I could think of, including:

1. ending all non-essential processes in case they could conflict somehow
with AVG
2. downloading the latest version and re-installing it over top of the
version on my PC
3. re-starting safe mode and trying to uninstall - same thing happens
4. Trying to uninstall it using both the Windows XP Control Panel's
"Add/Remove Programs" as well as the uninstall from the start menu -->
programs entry

I'm thinking I'm going to have to manually delete all of the folders and
then manually edit the registry. I have no idea how to do that though. Can
anyone advise? I've searched the web and I can't find anything that will
solve my problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ahhhh....

I finally got it - grisoft just released a new version of avg anti-virus
this past month, so I downloaded a trial version hoping that it would force
an uninstall of the version currently on my pc when I tried to install it.
Sure enough it did.

Thanks anyway!

AVG is well worth the price ;^) ...his download or MSI file was bunk, so the uninstall failed...always reinstall to uninstall
software that can't be removed from add/remove. If it meets the 'modern' windows application scenario.

Yeah I tried when logging in as Admin under WinXP safe mode. Didn't work.

It took the download and reinstall of the latest version (just released last
month) to do it. The first time I tried it, with the previous version,
didn't do it.
