[OT] Avira AntiVir Version 10

Hello:

I was able to download Avira AntiVir Version 10 last night. The Avira
Free web site redirects you to CNET's Download.com AntiVir page for
the download of the free version. Here's the link to download from:

http://download.cnet.com/Avira-Anti...virus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html?tag=mncol;pop

My AntiVir v9 gave me an upgrade notice last night (after I had
downloaded but not yet installed 10) and had a click to download link
on it.

What led me to write is an attempt at updating manually said my
9.0.0.422 is current. Just now again same thing. Perhaps Personal
edition users have to download it themselves.

I installed v10 Personal and rebooted. In the first 2-3 hours strange
happenings started:

- on a USB stick, files would delete then reshow on Refresh; then they
wouldn't delete for access denied, but then were no where to be seen
when I booted to Safe Mode; Took multiple boots to get it going, but
then..

- came back to the computer after two hours to find something to delete
had showed up in the Trash icon. But when I opened the Trash it was
empty (show hidden files checked). When I right clicked to empty, it
said the item was the Windows folder! Sort of scary. But upon another
reboot, all was back to normal.

- Overnight ran a full Avira scan - last a week ago - and woke up to
a message that it couldn't be completed due to 35 hidden objects.
First time. Said I need to restart the computer and run a full
scan again (why a different result the next time?).

Coincidence? This is not an Avira board, but in case anyone else runs
into oddities...

Anyone else using Avira Personal noticed problems? It also feels like
booting is taking close to 30 secs longer with 10.

Hi Gene:

I've read of other people having problems with the new AntiVir v10 in other
newsgroups.

So far I've run into 2 new oddities.

When I first attempted to do a full scan on my system last night, I started
the scan only to come back some time later only to find that in 1.5 hours
the "Luke Filewalker" window showed that the scan was at the beginning with
no items having scanned. I closed the Filewalker and main AntiVir screens,
re-opened the main AntiVir screen and clicked on the perform system scan
link/button. This time, the "Luke Filewalker" screen opened up and started
to show immediate progress in scanning items/objects.

I let the scan run overnight, and this morning I found that the scan had
properly completed. However, the scan reported a hidden object had been
found, when my last scan the day before with v9 showed no hidden objects.

I'm assuming that hidden objects is the term for rootkits. Is that correct?

And v10 is reporting the same false positives on v10 as with v9 that I
reported to Avira a couple of weeks ago. Avira confirmed they were false
positives, but have yet to modify either v9 or v10 definitions and scanner
engine to reflect this.

I'm wondering if I should revert to AntiVir v9 till Avira gets the major
kinks worked out in the new v10.

Cheers,
Jerry

The latest AV-Comparatives report (Feb. 2010) ranks Avira, Avast, AVG, and
others as having "few" false positives. But they significantly (to my
thinking) exceed the "very few" false positive reported by MSE, NOD32, and
others.

I just found Avira to have more than AVG or Avast and MSE, that is why I
stopped using it

Jerry, take a look at my thread on the Avira Personal forum:
http://forum.avira.com/wbb/index.php?page=Thread&postID=929228#post929228

Altho it's not recommended, I've been running MSE and Avira Personal
resident for many months w/o any apparent problems and lots of good
protection (or maybe it's just luck).

I think that I posted here in the past that I had a conflict between the AVG
Free mail scanner and BitDefender Free program, which was an on-demand
scanner only, with no real-time protection. I thought that I could use
BitDefender Free to get a second opinion, but it didn't play well with AVG.
After that, I've never tried to install a second anti-virus program.
