OT-All need Java version update

I know this post is OT, but believe this info should be passed-on.

New security hole found in older java versions. This hole effects most
common browsers (including Windows & Mozilla based browsers & a few
others too).

Long story, short.
"Replace older Java versions with the latest version is recommended".

Read about it here
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/24/java_browser_vuln/

Most (Windows & Mozilla based browsers) need to upgrade to this Java
Version:

If you update the Sun Micro Java, caution....

They have some version conflicts on their various websites.
One site says 1.4.06 is the latest. Another site says 1.5. Yet
another site lists 5.0.

If you investigate further, you find that 1.4.06 is outdated. You
will also find that 1.5 is the same as 5.0 and which is identified
as Java 2 Platform. [Confused yet? hahahaha]

When you go to download, go to the 'developer' section and
download from there.

Link to developer site and Java 2 Platform version 5 (aka 1.5):

That is right and it is confusing.

The newest version is JAVA 5, which's runtime environment is 1.5, so 5 and
1.5 are identical.

In fact, 1.4.06 is the latest file that was uploaded, it fixes a bug in
JAVA 4 (1.4) and should be used in cases one cannot update to 1.5 for any
reason.

Question:
I have not done anything about Java to date on this XpSp2.
How does one check as to the version or presence of Java? I just did a
search within Windows and there is a Java folder with zip files but not very
current dates. At the moment I have the custom security choices in IE as
Java VM high safety and just Scripting enabled and Scripting of Java applets
enabled.
This is a question likely better asked in a Microsoft IE group but I'm
starting here.

Control panel - there will be a Java icon there - double click and then
about will give you the version.

To make matters even worse, there are different kinds of JAVA runtime
environments from different producers. I spoke of the SUN JAVA runtime
environment 1.5 (for JAVA 5). If you have Windows, you probably have the
Microsoft Java runtime environment, which is still Java 3, AFAIK.

You can check on this in the software install/uninstall list, if you have
the JRE from Sun, there will be an entry "J2SE Runtime Enviroment <version
number>". Since you did not do anything about JAVA, it is most likely that
you only have the MS JRE and not Sun's.
