And thank you for the Off Topic. I have put it on to try it.

First thing to do is go to tools>options>read tab and ensure that you have a
tick in Get ### headers, I set mine to 50 to start with for subscribing to
new groups.

This link should open a WM communities account for you.
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

**Next thing to do is 'munge' your email address before you make a post!!**

Go to tools>accounts>double click the M$ communities account>on the General
Tab change the email address to ****@NOSPAM.***.com.

Enter the name you want to use when posting.

On the toolbar you will see the Newsgroups button, click that, then click
'Reset
list' to ensure that you have all available on the M$ server, now select the
other groups that you want to subscribe to, I suggest doing them one at a
time and use 'GoTo', that way you will only get the ### of messages that you
set earlier. this group alone would throw about 30,000 at you if you do it
any differently.

Now you need to select Microsoft Communities in the folder tree and set the
synchronization settings, right click on each group>sync settings, I have
get 'all messages' set.

Now go to the view menu>layout>customize toolbar>in the left pane select
Sync All>add, move the button up or down the toolbar to suit you? Use that
button to get all your mail and newsgroup messages at the same time.

So now you have the subscribed newsgroups, they will show something like 50
messages 32,000 not downloaded, to get more messages, on the tools menu>get
next headers, when you feel you have gone far enough back right click the
newsgroup>catch up.
That will remove those not downloaded and mark all on your PC as read, so
simply select all>rt click>mark as unread

That should get you started. Much easier than using the web site for the
newsgroups.

Anything else, get back.

Nothing, really, if they're in the Inbox. They just annoy me because I try
to keep the Inbox empty. They apparently annoy a lot of other people, too.

You know, it might help if everyone with undeletable messages called MS and
reported it.

Success!!!!!
I uninstalled AVG 7.5. and now both thunderbird and windows mail are
sending
& receiving mail. Disabling the email scanning on avg 7.5 wasn't enough.
The
avg is no problem on the win98 PC but clearly stopped the e mails on the
vista PC. Now I just need to find a free AV programme. Any ideas? Thank
you
for all your ideas & help. Terry

I'm using AVG 7.5 in Vista with windows mail & have never had a problem with
email.
Try installing it again & see if it works.

I think Steve was alluding to "massage" vs "message". :)
Everlasting massage does sound pretty good...

"undeletable massage"

not message

That wasn't the spell checker. You didn't turn on the "spell context"
aspect of it. <G>

Make sure you do a custom install and uncheck the email scanner.

I went to TBird and still have the same problem. Cannot receive any email.
Says" Server refused connection" Spent hours on phone with ISP tech support.
They said dump Vista. No help at all.

That particular Orange ISP tech doesn't understand. IE6 doesn't run on
Vista. IE 7 runs on Vista. If Thunderbird doesn't work, review your account
settings. I would try Orange again in hopes of getting a knowledgeable
technician. In no way would I accept a comment from an ISP to 'dump Vista.'

What settings are you referring to? I have IE7. TBird is setup exactly like
WinMail was when it was working. Have tried to delete account and rebuild it
again. Nothing seems to work. Maybe I will download Windows Live Mail (beta)
and see what other types of monsters Microsoft has created. It is beyone
belief that they put thesse products out when they don't work, admit they
have an "issue" and have the nerve to charge me $35 for phone support when
they can't tell me how to fix the problem!

Sounds like you need to get a better ISP!
We can't support Thunderbird in this newsgroup, but if you want
to give us your detailed Windows Mail error message, I can try
to help you with that.

Still no help. I can send email, but cannot receive email. I can see the
email on the host webmail site.

Are you sure BigPond supports port 995? A quick glance at their website
seems to indicate they want you to use the standard POP port 110 (no SSL).

Checking with the bigpond web site, They make no mention of using a
nonstandard Port and specifically say do not use a secure connection.

I would try setting the port to 110 (the 'standard') (advanced tab) and
unselecting the 'Log on using Secure Password Authentication' (Servers tab).
