Thunderbird is a very nice email program with excellent junk filtering.

I think the OP's issue is not email client related.
All we know is that he can't receive although he can send,
with no other details.

I have downloaded thunderbird now. It has the same problem. Sends ok but no
receive. I have disabled all e mail filtering, tried disabling firewall but
no joy. Any thoughts?

Just as I suspected, your issue is not mail client related.
Do you get any sort of error message when you try to receive mail?

If no error message, can you give us the name of the incoming mail server,
and any special ports or settings?

Terry, can you log in here with username & password?

After you have checked your mail, click on Help and Support, type in Outlook
Express, (Windows Mail set up is the same as OE) have a look around at the
respective settings for Dial-up or BB, since you never mentioned how you
connect.

Is it a former dial-up account and you now use BB?

I have a win 98 pc next to this vista pc, both on BB. The w98 is fine with e
mail.
I checked all the settings were the same on both PC's but I will check again
to see if there is any difference. I hadc to do a system restore on the vista
pc. Could that have blocked port 110?

I doubt that it would have caused that?

Try using:
pop.freeserve.com
or
pop.orangehome.co.uk

Try removing the account completely and rebuild it from scratch.
Tools>accounts>mail>remove

Off Topic:
It puzzles me why so many people still post to here from the web, instead of
using the built in Microsoft Communities feature in WM?
This link should open your WM communities account for you.

Please post the *complete* text of the error message (copy & paste).
It should look something like this:
"The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.wanadoo.co.uk',
server 'pop.wanadoo.co.uk', Protocol POP3, port 110, secure (SSL): No,
socket error: 10060, Error Number: OX800ccc0e"

Thank you for those ideas. I deleted account & rebuilt, tried the other
server names (it instantly said failed to connect to those so it likes them
even less), all settings are the same as on win98 OE next to it and e mails
work fine on that. I still have all AV scanning disabled. No joy with either
thunderbird or windows mail. Any thoughts?

Success!!!!!
I uninstalled AVG 7.5. and now both thunderbird and windows mail are sending
& receiving mail. Disabling the email scanning on avg 7.5 wasn't enough. The
avg is no problem on the win98 PC but clearly stopped the e mails on the
vista PC. Now I just need to find a free AV programme. Any ideas? Thank you
for all your ideas & help. Terry

Terry, reinstall AVG -- FOR ME PLEASE :)

So far in to the install you are given the option for 'Custom' install,
choose that, remove the check from email scan and continue.

Let us know how you get on.

I have AVG installed, as I say above, with no problems.

I was told a while back by fellow MVP - P A Bear, that AVG still scans mail
even with the scanner disabled, I can't find the mail now, it is on one of
my other machines, I did not believe him!!

Pleased you sorted it all on your own :)

I note that you ignored my Off Topic item :-(

Yours is the first report I've seen of trouble caused by
AVG 7.5 without email scanning. You might try the free Avast.

I was getting undeletable massages in the Inbox with email scanning not
installed. None since I switched to Avast.

It's ok. I have macafee. That will have been the conflict as now I read never
have 2 AV progs on a PC. Though 2 other PC's I know have macafee to have the
firewall with av disabled and that works ok on both w98 and xp. The vista PC
not happy with that. Re the O/T I will look at it but I want W mail to do the
basic mail thing before I get fancy.
