Opentype font

I have loaded an opentype font (ChallengeExtra Bold Std) that I can see and
use in Word 2003/2007, Excel 2003/2007 but it shows as a basic font in
Powerpoint 2003/2007. Anyone got any ideas please?

When you open PowerPoint, the font displayed, is the font that has been set
in your blank presentation.

When you click on the down arrow beside the current font and scroll down, do
you see your font? What are you trying to transfer, and what does the error
message say?

OK, if I scroll down in Word and Excel I see Challenge Extra Bold Std as the
actual font (sorry don't know how to get different font in reply). If I
scroll down in Powerpoint I see"Challenge Extra Bold Std", i.e. just like
Arial font. I don't get any error msg.

Thanks. So the font preview isn't working correctly in PPT?

If you apply the font to some text in PPT, does it work? Or does it just
stay Arial?

If you then go to Format | Replace Fonts (2003) or Home | Replace | Replace
Fonts (2007), what kind of symbol does the font have next to it in the list?

PPT is a bit more picky about its licensing than Word and Excel, I think.

Ah, thanks for the info.

This is where it gets muddy for me -- I'm so not a font guru!

I know you can have True Type fonts, Postscript fonts and Open type fonts.

When I look in my fonts folder, I see just a couple of TT icons and fonts
listed as True Type. Those fonts use the TTF extension. But I see a ton with
O symbols listed as Open Type fonts. Most of those also have .TTF
extensions. I only see one Open Type font with a .OTF extension -- it's a
proprietary client font, and I can tell you I've had problems with that font
in PowerPoint.

Anyway, I'm glad you mentioned the fonts.com and the actual font name! When
I go and look at the options there, it gives you format options:

Mac and Win Opentype
Windows Truetype
Windows Postscript
Mac Postscript
Mac Truetype

I don't know why the Mac and Win OpenType PostScript Flavor wouldn't work.
Oh, but you know, there's also a Mac and Win OpenType - TrueType Flavor
(.TTF). (See Challenge Com Bold, for example.) I think that's what you need
for PowerPoint.

So for Challenge Extra Bold, since it doesn't have OpenType-TrueType Flavor,
I think you'll have to go with Windows Truetype instead -- but I don't quite
know exactly why! Something to do with the "postscript" flavor, which has to
do with how the OpenType font is set up under the hood. Fonts.com is a good
place -- maybe they'll let you exchange the font if you explain what's
happened.

But wait, just to clarify -- the font shows up in the font dropdown as
Arial. What happens when you apply it to text? I'm assuming the font looks
like Arial, is that correct? Just curious here, because I do think the
problem is that "postscript flavor."

Hi Tim

OK Word and Excel show the name "Challenge Extra Bold Std" in the dropdown
list and uses the font. When applied to text it uses the font without any
problems.

In Powerpoint, the name "Challenge Extra Bold Std" appears in the dropdown
list but in a standard font like "Ariel". When applied it uses the "Ariel"
style font.

Hope this helps

When I look in my fonts folder, I see just a couple of TT icons and fonts
listed as True Type. Those fonts use the TTF extension. But I see a ton
with
O symbols listed as Open Type fonts. Most of those also have .TTF
extensions. I only see one Open Type font with a .OTF extension -- it's a
proprietary client font, and I can tell you I've had problems with that
font
in PowerPoint.

Anyway, I'm glad you mentioned the fonts.com and the actual font name!
When
I go and look at the options there, it gives you format options:

Mac and Win Opentype
Windows Truetype
Windows Postscript
Mac Postscript
Mac Truetype

I don't know why the Mac and Win OpenType PostScript Flavor wouldn't
work.
Oh, but you know, there's also a Mac and Win OpenType - TrueType Flavor
(.TTF). (See Challenge Com Bold, for example.) I think that's what you
need
for PowerPoint.

So for Challenge Extra Bold, since it doesn't have OpenType-TrueType
Flavor,
I think you'll have to go with Windows Truetype instead -- but I don't
quite
know exactly why! Something to do with the "postscript" flavor, which has
to
do with how the OpenType font is set up under the hood. Fonts.com is a
good
place -- maybe they'll let you exchange the font if you explain what's
happened.

But wait, just to clarify -- the font shows up in the font dropdown as
Arial. What happens when you apply it to text? I'm assuming the font
looks
like Arial, is that correct? Just curious here, because I do think the
problem is that "postscript flavor."

Echo S, thanks for all you help and support so far. It been brilliant.

Have had a look at font details (purchased online via www.fonts.com
from
www.itcfonts.com).
It says "Format: Mac & Win OpenType - Postscript Flavour (.oft)"
Not sure what the "flavour" means.

I think that sounds like a postscript font symbol. But Open Type fonts
show
up with an O symbol.

I'm just wondering if something about the font itself is "off." Where
did
it
(ChallengeExtra Bold Std) come from?

them.

Thanks. So the font preview isn't working correctly in PPT?

If you apply the font to some text in PPT, does it work? Or does it
just
stay Arial?

If you then go to Format | Replace Fonts (2003) or Home | Replace |
Replace
Fonts (2007), what kind of symbol does the font have next to it in
the
list?

PPT is a bit more picky about its licensing than Word and Excel, I
think.

OK, if I scroll down in Word and Excel I see Challenge Extra Bold
Std
as
the
actual font (sorry don't know how to get different font in
reply).
If I
scroll down in Powerpoint I see"Challenge Extra Bold Std", i.e.
just
like
Arial font. I don't get any error msg.

What Michael said.

Also, could you clarify what you mean by "shows as a basic
font"?

I have loaded an opentype font (ChallengeExtra Bold Std) that I
can
see
and
use in Word 2003/2007, Excel 2003/2007 but it shows as a basic
font
in
Powerpoint 2003/2007. Anyone got any ideas please?

And OpenType fonts can contain data in either TrueType or PostScript
format.

OpenType-wrapped TT then.

From the OptenType FAQ at http://www.microsoft.com/typography:

Q. What applications support OpenType features?
A.
Desktop publishing applications such as Adobe InDesign and QuarkXpress
support
the largest number of OpenType features. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe
Illustrator
support many features. Support for common OpenType features is also being
added
to Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Word in Office 14.

IOW, Windows allows you to install OpenType but applications may not
support
all OpenType features.

It also says that the same font can be used on Windows and Mac.

Right. But it seems that Postscript type wrapped in OpenType doesn't work in
PowerPoint on the PC.

Or at least not well.

In Powerpoint, the name "Challenge Extra Bold Std" appears in the dropdown
list but in a standard font like "Ariel". When applied it uses the "Ariel"
style font.

So you're taking the option to show fonts in their face. Okay.

Have you clean font caches? I use a tool FontNuke from www.jamapi.com/pr/fn/
It's free and it's the most thorough one I've found.

In Powerpoint the font shows as "Ariel" in the dropdown list and when
applied looks like "Ariel".

Just curious. Do you really mean Ariel spelled with an e? If it's not Arial
with an a it could be an important factor.

See A: above. They don't say what "common OpenType features" are being added
to Pub and Word in Ofc 14, but we can assume that they're not in The PPT
Which Is Yet To Come, or earlier versions.

So d'ya figure the common feature in question is, like "working"? ;-)

I can tell you for a fact that Type 1-style OpenTypes work in PowerPoint for
Mac 2004 and 2008, and Windows 2007 ... I use them daily. What you don't get
are things like automatic ligatures and stuff ... but in the basic Roman
character set, they work.
