Hello,

I have been trying to install openoffice on XP Pro PCs. During installation
XP completely shutdowns. I cannot find any solution or recommendations to
this problem anywhere.

Any urgent help would be most grateful.

Thank you,

That's a new one. This is version 2.3 you're trying out right?

Hi,

That's correct it is version 2.3. XP shutdowns or reboots everytime during
the first few seconds of installing openoffice.

Have you tried Microsoft Office XP? It can read files created by Open
Office.

What do you mean by "shutdowns"? Do you mean that the PC just instantly
turns off with no notice?

Does it automatically restart?

Two things come to mind.

First, if it restarts, XP is crashing. Go to Control Panel, System,
Advanced, startup and recovery/settings, . and under System Failure
de-select "automatically restart". This won't fix anything but you will
get an error message, perhaps a blue screen with a STOP code, which is
cryptic but somewhat helpful. There will also be a file mentioned.

Second, if it doesn't restart, there's a good possibility of hardware
problems, specifically memory related, often caused by overheating. These
don't heal and can only be fixed by replacement. However, determining what
exactly to replace is not so easy and gets expensive.

hahaha. Maybe he can find a link to a version of Microsoft Office XP that
has the same price tag as Open Office.

I don't think opening OpenOffice files is the question.
I believe the OP wants to use OpenOffice instead of buying MS Office.
That is a valid choice.

That sounds like a RAM problem to me. Go to Control Panel->(select Classic
View)->System Properties->Advanced Tab->Startup and Recovery section
Settings button and uncheck the box "Automatically restart". Click Ok out of
there. You should get a blue screen with cryptic information on it rather
than a reboot the next time this happens. Post that back. Also go to Control
Panel->Administrative Tools ->Event Viewer. Look for red "X"'s and see what
has been crashing.

Post this info back here and someone may be able to shed light on the
problem.

Well, probably not, but he didn't mention price. For some (most?) it's the
result that counts, not the cost.

Also try a fresh copy of the download; they do get corrupted during
download, and that install file is extremely large.

Thanks for all your replies.

I tried the solution to uncheck 'automatically restart' but the PC just
reboots without notice. They are all brand new PCs which are being setup.

They want openoffice because they can't afford anything else. The only other
program I can thing of as cheap is Staroffice. Although you have to pay for
this.

Hmm, well, it could be an installer issue or an account permissions
issue. Did you happen to check the FAQ or forums on the OO web site
and see if anyone else is having this same issue? I almost want to say
to give version 2.2.1 a try and see what happens. It's possible you
could do an in-place upgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.3. It's kind of a goofy
way of doing it but it might get you to where you need to go.

Check the event log to see if an error is appearing.

One thing you might try on one is lowering the video resolution and colour
depth during the install. Or, press F8 to get to the boot selector at
startup, and choose VGA mode.

A common cause of crashes is video driver issues, and VGA mode will move
those right out of the picture, as it were. If the install works in VGA
mode, that points directly at the video drivers in use on those systems.
