OpenOffice, Office11 & Icons

The wrong icons are showing for Office 11 documents, even though the
correct application in File Associations is showing. The contents of
File Properties on the General tab alongside the file name, shows the
icon for OpenOffice writer. This icon shows in a newly created
shortcut for a document created by Word or Excel (the icon shown is
the OO icon for that application).
The type of file says it's a Microsoft Word/Excel Document and Opens with
Microsoft Office/Excel Word. If I click on the change button to show the
selection window, the highlighted program is OpenOffice2.org.
This type of behaviour is repeated for Excel files.
If right-clicking on the desktop to select a new item, non of the
Office 11 items are displayed only the OpenOffice programs.
Most of the time the correct application loads the .doc or .xls file
with the MS application. Sometimes - can't give an incidence level -
it loads with the OpenOffice program.
I have tried an Office11 repair with my CD - no effect.
I have tried TweakUI Repair Icons - no effect.
I have deleted all instances of Iconcache.db - no effect.
I still want to retain OpenOffice - there are a few features that are
just not available in Office11 which are important to me, (one of
which is the ability to create PDF files).
I've read postings on this issue, hence the attempts above.
I suppose if I must, I may be forced into removing OO but really
don't want to as a couple of organisations I do work for use it.
If anyone has any solutions then please help - I'll be eternally
grateful as it's a bit annoying.

And you are wondering why. Office 11 and Open Office on same computer? Describe the meaning of the word "Default"

I have Open Office and Office 2003 (Office 11) on the same machine with no
trouble at all - I suspect that what the OP did was when he installed OO,
it asks you whether you want MS Office files to be opened in OO. If you
say "yes" then the icons are changed.

Thanks Gordon, that gave me a partial resolution. I now have the correct
icons for XLS etc files, but .DOC are showing as Wordpad icons although Word
opens them.
Of course when I installed, taking the "default" was quite natural because I
had no MS products on my machine.
I just re-ran the install routine and unchecked the defaults - I'll plod on
trying to get rid of the Wordpad icon now.
