Opening Files on a netowrk drive speed issue

I have all network drives not in use disconnected. I have dumped the temp
files via disk cleanup various times, doubled the virtual and physical
memory, clear up all printers not in our office, and verifiied all were live.
Cleaned up old programs, various clean virus scans with enterprise mcafee,
cleaned up autostarts, defrag'd, ad-awared, microsoft spywared, spy
botted...still slow to open files on a live network drive.

Any suggestions?

Replace all the network drives with shortcuts to the networked location.
Each network drive connection generates network traffic from the slow machine
to the connections even though you are not actually using the connection. A
shortcut activates the connection when it is needed and only generates
network traffic while it is in use.
