Ok here is the problem. I just got a laptop and connected
it to my existing Windows XP Network. The laptop is able
to access the network resources (data, printers, etc) and
the internet with no problems. The Desktop is running XP
Pro and the Laptop is running XP Home.
I created some mapped drives on my desktop so that I
could access the files that I needed on the laptop
without playing catch up with floppies, etc. I am able to
access these mapped drives and open the necessary files.
However, every time I open a file on the mapped drive I
recieve a Read Only status message regardless of the
program, word or excel. I have checked on the host pc to
ensure that the box marked [Allow Network Users to Change
My Files] in My Computer -> Properties-> Sharing is
checked along with [Share this Folder on the Network] and
that EVERY SINGLE FILE AND FOLDER in the mapped drive is
not labeled as READ-ONLY. I had to go through and select
all files and folders then uncheck them all as Read Only
as ALL were initially marked as Read Only. Furthermore I
have applied the work-around in the Microsoft Knowledge
Base noting the Windows Explorer issue by renaming the
registry key and then switching explorer's Folder view
option to windows classic mode.
I would appreciate any help in this matter as this
current situation is about as time saving and efficient
as me playing where's the floppy game without the ability
to access and modify my files. Also is you could reply to
my email your ?'s that would be great as I am not always
able to come to the newsgroups and check the status
myself.
Thank you all for your help.
