Opening file in Word get running virus scan

I have researched this problem with opening files in Word 2003 and it taking
up to a minute to open a file. It says "running virus scan". I don't have
Norton Antivius installed and I have also uninstalled EndNote. I've
uninstalled and reinstalled MS Office 2003 without any luck.

If it says "running virus scan" then that is probably what is happening.
There are other antivirus packages apart from Norton - which one do you
have? Scanning can be slow - it depends on the file being opened and the
spec of the machine you are running on and who knows what else.

I'm running Network Associates McAfee VirusScan. On McAfee I've even turned
off the On Access scanner option and Word is still slow. It is not slow
opening Word, but once I try and open a file (can be a file that only has the
word "Test") and can take 30sec to a minute to open and says "running virus
scan". It is a P4 2.4Ghz with 760MB RAM.
