I receive some email attachments with a .dat extension. What program should
I use to open these files?

Hi

Do you know where the files have come from and have you virus checked them?
..dat files are 'normally' created by X program and then used by that
program.

The files came from a friend and have never contained a virus. Could an
ordinary file become corrupted into a .dat file when e-mailing, and if so,
how? What can the friend do to avoid it?

The files always come from a reliable friend and do not contain a virus.
Sometimes I know the file was a photo, sometimes apparently something from
the internet. Have they become corrupted from some other form into a .dat
file in the process of e-mailing? How can the problem be avoided?

If you mean a Winmail.dat then tell the person who is sending you
these with Outlook to uncheck the box :"Always send messages in
Microsoft Exchange rich text format."

I delete all winmail.dat files and ask the Outlook sender to change
from Rich Text to Plain Text.
I opened a few and found nothing of use inside.
This will open them if there is anything of use inside.
