Opening a Wordpad document

I received an email attachment that was written in Wordpad and when I open it
it is unreadable. The file extension is .wps. When the same attachment was
sent to another person and then she forwarded it to me, I could open it.
File extension is still .wps. I hope somebody can help me.

Try this, if you are confortable editing the registry. If not, maybe someone
else can do it for you.

WordPad Error Workaround

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this problem, edit the registry and add the
EnableLegacyConverters entry with a DWORD value of 1. To do this, follow
these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Wordpad

3. Right-click Wordpad, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
4. Type EnableLegacyConverters, and then press ENTER to name the new entry.

5. Right-click EnableLegacyConverters, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
7. Quit Registry Editor.

Hi Will, when I right click on the icon and click on 'open with' and then
click on Word, I can open it. Thanks for your help.

Hi Tom, thanks for your answer. I didn't try it as it sounds quite
complicated. I did figure out one way to open the documents: right click on
the icon, click on 'open with' and then click on Word. I was able to read it
in Word then. I don't know if this will always work but it is with the
documents that I currently have. Thanks again.
