Word Opened Documents show as symbols rather than words

When I open some of my word docs, I see only symbols on a page. Is there an easy fix?

I'm not computer savvy, but here's what I'm seeing as my operating system info...

2002 Microsoft Windows XP
emachines desk top pc C6537
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor
3500+
2.21 GHz. 896 MB of RAM
AVG free

What version of office are you using??? Service Pack

Did these documents come from somewhere else? Did you receive in an email
