Hi to all,
Don't know if this is possible (or legal ?!) but have two computers at
home, not networked. I have one ADSL modem (ethernet) that I have been
using for original computer win98SE. I also have winxp that I would like to
occassionally go online with ie unplug ethernet cable from 98SE plug into
XP.
Have installed an ethernet card on the XP and have tried running the setup
CD I originally got from the ISP when I went to broadband with 98SE (It was
a deal where they supply the modem and all relevant hardware for a self
install.) All my account numbers, passwords etc are accepted on XP but the
last step of connecting the modem fails with instructions to check
connections, reboot, cross your fingers and finally "contact your ISP with
the error message."
Ha bloody ha - ever tried the support number at Bigpond? I'd still be on
hold.
So once again I come to the gurus.
I thought if I put the info from ipconfig into the relevant network areas in
'network setup' on XP and the modem, might work, though get a bit rattled by
XP's network area.
Get a bit rattled by XP in general "access denied" and administrator
passwords? I am the one and only user - no passwords are used !! What a
nanny of a system, but yeah for media work is good.
Any and all opinions welcome. Thanks.

There's no real reason that you shouldn't simply move the Ethernet cable
from one machine to the other, but it will create practical problems, such
as messages about missing connections. I believe it should work if you
power down the modem when you make the change so that the network is forced
to drop the connection and restart the service. You may need to allow a
long period for this - more then 5 minutes. Bigpond has so much confidence
in its network (!) that it assumes that breaks of only a few minutes do not
necessarily mean the device has gone away, and they tend to keep the
connection alive.

A router is the simplest way to go and it gives you added security. You can
actually create a simpler network just be installing a second network card
in the PC that is connected to the modem, but that doesn't give the same
security (or expandability).

Just because you are the only XP user doesn't mean you have administrator
privileges. In fact, there are good reasons not to operate with
administrator privileges for normal purposes. Have a look for a second
login (or create a new one) that has administrator privileges, and use it
when needed.

You didn't have to install the RC to get around the Admin pw, it's easy to
change/remove, there's even a way to change it without even knowing what the pw is.
Now that you have circumvented your way around it that makes it easier to be
compromised. One good purpose not to run with Admin Privileges is because it has
full rights to everything, once compromised you're dead in the water with a lot of
cleaning up to do.

You never mentioned whether you use Pro or Home and Pro can be better secured.

Why would I need a second log on for the comp.? I'm the only one driving this thing.
I like to be (or think that I am) in control?! Don't like being told "No entry"
Installed the recovery console and had a hell of a job getting around the Admin
password, still get 'access denied' where ever I turn. I'm not changing anything,
just having a look. B-) Recomend good sites for understanding about this Admin and
second user stuff? There is so many differing oppinions out there!!

B-) Had 2 options on boot up 'winxp HOME or recovery console' I had no idea, as I never gave it one, got this computer from a mate, and I took it back to factory settings. to use the RC was a three strikes and you're out sort of password.

Yah, success.
Had to throw myself at the mercy of bigpond. Almost instant connection to service department (!!!) and a very professinal walk through of my settings. Think it was something to do with the TCP/IP stack or something, bigpond weren't giving away their trade secrets !!
Now I just unplug the ethernet cable and plug in other computer, no settings to change. Better get all the virus equipment polished up now.

I can see a possible delay in shipping any items or where it might be a hassle if
one had to contact their creditors, but I don't think it would be impossible. Now
that I know Pebble is halfway around the globe, it definitely wouldn't cost
