PC rebooting

Ray &Fran

I am a Hi speed internet used on Windows Xp home edition user and on
Thursday I received a new Modem from my isp . The letter I received with
the modem said they were
upgrading their network and I had an older modem that would
not work after August 2nd so I received a Speedstream 6520 .

I installed the new Modem as per instructions and Everything has been
working Fine . At least I thought it was. Since installing the Modem every
time I do a complete shutdown of my computer everything is fine and then
about after 10 minutes my computer mysteriously starts up again . My older
modem never did that .

I know it is the modem since I turned the modem off and my computer stays
off . If the modem is on My hard drive reboots itself . Does anyone have any
Ideas what could cause this . MY isp help never heard about this happening
before.
I know there are many computer experts out there who may have an idea.

Thanks for any ideas. I changed nothing myself . I followed the following
instructions to connect the new modem and the set up wizard took over all I
supplied were passwords

1 unplug existing power supply Disconnect phone line running from phone jack
to modem and the Ethernet cable running from your pc from the back of modem

2 with the enclosed power supply plug in the new modem included in kit

3 plug Ethernet cable running from pc into slot 1marked Ethernet at the back
of the Modem (the slot is yellowcolored)

4 plug the phone cord running from phone jack into slot labelled DSL (beige
Colored)

Everything you mentioned is correct. There is an item in BIOS labeled 'wake
on Lan'. How it changed or if it did I don't know. However go into BIOS and
turn off everything that says 'wake on-----'.

How do I go into Bios ??? or find it and will I get into trouble if I go

Go into your BIOS setup program, and turn off the "Wake on Modem"
setting.

BIOS is Basic Input Output Systems. It can be accessed by tapping one of the
function keys F1--F12. Unfortunately it varies by computer manufacturer. It
is F1 on my current computer, was F8 on my previous computer. I don't know
which on yours. If you have a users guide it will tell you there. Just be
careful and only change wake on ---.

Before going into BIOS also check your network adapter settings. Possibly
also the new modem dial-up adapter settings if one of those was installed
with the modem software (Network Connections). I'm presuming that the modem
is connected to an ethernet adapter in your computer. If it is a USB modem
the following doesn't apply, though there might be similar options for it.

Look in Control Panel - System Properties- Device Manager-Network Adapters-
right click your ethernet adapter and select Properties. Click the Advanced
tab on the box that pops up and look down the list of items displayed for
"Wake on Lan after shutdown" (or similar wording), then set the Value box to
read Disabled. If there are other Wake-up options set those to disabled as
well. Click Okay when done to exit.

The BIOS is a piece of software (often called firmware) that resides
on a chip on your motherboard. It contains many of the basic settings
for your computer.

It comes with a setup program for modifying those basic settings. You
can access the setup program when you first power on, before Windows
even starts to boot, by pressing a particular key.

How to get into your BIOS depends, not on Windows, but on what
motherboard/BIOS you have. One common way is to press the Del key when
you first power on, but that's not necessarily right for your
computer. Watch the screen carefully when you first boot; there's
often a message there telling you what to do. If not, check your
system documentation or check with your vendor.

Also look here: http://michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm Or
just try the Del key. There's a good chance that's correct for you.

Thank you to all who offered advice I finally solved my problem .
RalfG gave me these steps and I found the Wakeonlanfrom poweroff and
disabled it and when I shut down I no longer rebooted. I really appreciate
all the help . I do not think Aliant support knows too much . They should
have suggested what you folks did .
Many thanks again

_____

Basic Input Output System. A VERY simple tiny operating system in a small
memory module that does not need electrical power to maintain its contents.
The BIOS controls the operation of a PC until the real operating system is
invoked (Windows, Linux, OS X, etc.) Once the real operating system starts,
the BIOS is not used in modern systems.
