Onboard NIC works/fails and takes down network

I believe I have a faulty onboard Realtekidentified as "RTL8139 ...Family
Fast Ethernet NIC" on my PC networked through a router with a laptop and
another PC. It appears to be failing, and when it does it takes down the
entire network, and the cable modem is unable to sync. It works sometimes
and sometimes it doesn't. The reason I think in is my onboard NIC is
because I have wired it directly from the modem to the PC and after a few
minutes or hours it will fail, and the modem loses sync. If I shutdown my
PC the modem will resync and the other laptop and PC are able to perform as
they should. i.e. internet access, file sharing. Anyone have any other
ideas I may be missing here? My solution would be to disable the onboard
NIC and install a NIC card.
