Old Product Key

Here at work we have an old Micronpc with XP Pro on it, sticker reads:
Windows XP Professional 1-2CPU. The laptop is fried so trying to salvage the
product code from it. Have another laptop with XP Home installed, but it
needs to be XP Pro to log into network. Is this product code for XP Pro
service pack 1? I can not get it to accept the new code when trying to
upgrade the newer laptop to XP Pro.

Thank you in advanve.

Sorry, but you cannot use the OEM Windows XP product key
on a different computer. It is only license for the original computer
it came with. If the computer died, so did the OEM license.

I would assume the XP Pro died with the laptop if it was an OEM version as
usually they are tied to the machine they are first installed on and cannot
be transferred to another machine.

To expand on what others have said, the product keys have nothing to do with
SPx. OEM disks have special product codes that marry up with the BIOS. That
is, a specific BIOS requires a specific product key. Certain OEM disks
require a specific BIOS (and product key).

In your case, the product key for the MicronPC will work only with the CD
for a MicronPC. It may even require a MicronPC BIOS chip.

Sorry.

Is there not a software solution somewhere for a XP-Home machine to connect
to a domain?

Thank you for the help and info. Guess we'll be looking to buy another
product code.
