old / new xp install

I have installed xp after a reformat, the OS installed with no problems, when
it finished installing and rebooted, it came back, start windows normally,
hit enter, it reboots and comes back with, start windows normally, I ran a
utility program that told me that "hal.dll" was bad, I copied the file from
another good computer and pasted it in the Sys32 folder. rebooted and again
it said "start windows normally" It keeps doing this after every reboot. I am
in the process of running a memory test, but I think the memory is good. The
computer was doing this before the new install, but with a different hard
drive. the hard drive that I put in was working fine on the other old
machine. I have ran a hard drive utilites program with no faults.
I sure can use some help, and it would be really appreciated!!

You have Boot.INI trouble. Boot from CD, and start the Recovery Console Use
the command 'type C:\boot.ini' save the file for backup, Identify your
drives with the 'MAP' utility. Compare the entries in the boot.ini
[operating system] block, with the results you see from 'Map arc'. At this
point you may see a way to hack boot.ini. You might try various edits from
backup. The utilities 'bootcfg /rebuild', and 'fixboot
yoursystemdriveletter' may help you do that.

Sounds a bit complicated. Wouldn't it be easier to simply run msconfig.exe,
click on the BOOT.INI tab, and then click on the "Check All Boot Paths" button?

Ooops...Obliviously my suggestion would only apply if the system would start up.

It seems that the dose of Novacaine that my dentist used yesterday for the prep
of my two crowns, affected more than just my gum area. ;-)
