Old McAfee VirusScan 6.0--will it still work?

I have a sealed box of brand-new McAfee VirusScan 6.0 AV software from 2001
which I never opened or used. I want to know if I install this now, will it
be able
to get free virus updates for a year, or whatever the default time period
is? I run XP Home. Thanks!

Certainly not supported by Mcafee UK. A very quick amount of rooting
around on Mcafee's site revealed this. I doubt you'll get any updates.

It might work for you; I had some problems with VS 6 and XP Pro SP1, where a
status box would pop up after I logged in. I ended up getting an upgrade to
VS 7, and that's worked fine for me. As another poster mentioned, you
probably won't be able to get a year's updates, but will have to manually
update your anti-virus definition files.

There were some program updates to VS6 - they are still at
http://download.mcafee.com/us/updates/upgrade_patches.asp after you select
the product and language. In fact, I'd wander over to
http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/ and look at the VirusScan 6 forum, doing a
search for messages with XP in them. I did a quick look and it sounds like
VS6 was good for the original version of XP; would work with SP1, and was
so-so with SP2, which you should be running. Or post your question on the
forum; I'm sure someone will have an answer for you.

Bottom line, you might be better off with a current version of McAfee for
your XP Home system, and give the sealed copy of VS6 to someone who is still
running Windows 98. Just my thoughts.

When posting the SAME message to multiple groups, cross-post instead of
multi-post. Cross-posting keeps replies visible to all respondents in
all the newsgroups to which you post so they don't waste time
duplicating someone else's reply. There should be no reason to keep
other respondents in the dark regarding all of the discussion.
Cross-posting also uses FAR less resources. Not only does one copy get
saved on your newsgroup server (with links to it in the other groups)
but only one copy needs to get sent to all the other worldwide newsgroup
servers (to save bandwidth) and only one copy is on those other
newsgroup servers (to save a significant amount of aggregate disk
space). Whether cross-posting or multi-posting the SAME message, it
should obviously be on-topic in each newsgroup to which you post.
Shotgunning several unrelated or loosely related groups with your SAME
message is sloppy and could be considered spamming, especially if your
post is seen as off-topic.

The new engine supports VS6 and above.

I am not sure about when an unopened box gives you 1 year updates but will
check for you if you like me to.

Usually it is 1 year from date of purchase though you can manually load the
updates, this is however considered as using a non-licenced version.

Who knows mcafee could have updated their rules though I agree with the
above poster who suggested using a newer version. VS6 is behind the times
and will probably not be included in the new v5 engine..

Reply from Mcafee. I was incorrect teh 12mths are from registration

He will be offered the 12 month update period. It is from the time of
registration and not from the time of purchase.

These updates should still come through automatically as well.

However there are a couple of things that they need to keep in mind.

1. McAfee isn't doing any back testing on this product. So if there are any
major changes to the DAT files, which I don't foresee at all he might run
into problems with them.

2. The product as you and the customer are aware is 4 products back. So this
isn't supported anymore. Meaning if they run into a problem with the program
the only thing that McAfee can do is help them uninstall it and upgrade.
