Old JetDirect print server in new ColorLaserJet?

Hi *,

we've got an old HP LaserJet 2100 with a builtin print server Jet
Direct 600 N.
As we're about to replace the LJ 2100, we're wondering if we can use
its print server in the new printer which will most probably be a
Color LaserJet 3800.

Can anybody give me a hint? Unfortunately, I coudn't find anything
useful on the HP websites.

Regards and TIA,
Christian

Hi Christian,
In theory, the JetDirect 600N should work in the Color LaserJet 3800.
The JetDirect 600N is an EIO-based card and in theory, the JetDirect
600N will work in any HP printer with an EIO slot. The Color LaserJet
3800 is such a printer. If I was going to try this combination, I
would update the JetDirect 600N to the latest firmware possible.

However, HP is currently selling the Color LaserJet 3800n (the LaserJet
3800 bundled with a JetDirect 620n card) for $900 -- $100 more than the
base LaserJet 3800. Although it is out-of-stock now, I would porbably
just buy the package if I could. Its a tested configuration and the
JetDirect 620n is a better card. It has more security controls. It
should be supported longer. If you have JetDirect 600n J3110A or
J3111A variants (as opposed to the J3113A variant), the 620n is also an
upgrade to 100Mbit. If you anticipate printing larger, color files on
the 3800, a 100Mbit connection might be useful. Even if you have the
J3113A variant of 600n, the 620n is still probably faster. Finally, if
for whatever reason the JetDirect 600n didn't work, you would have to
go back to HP to buy the 620n card. Sold seperately, HP wants $350 for
it.

thank you very much.

Yes -in theory. I was hoping to get an answer from some guy telling me
"No problem. Got it running myself."... ;-)

I completely agree. :) The only problem is our budget: What we'd like to
buy is not only the network-capable printer, but also an additional
paper tray.
And these HP paper trays ar f****** expensive (round about 450 EUR).
Thus, my idea was to save some money (by using the old JetDirect
card) and spending it on the paper tray.

I know...
Well, I already sent an email to HP concerning my problem, but I'm
still waiting for the answer... If I get one, I'll post it here.

Thank you!!

Christian
