OL 2003 will not close

B

Bill Williams

I have a new laptop with Win XP SP2. I download and install all Windows
updates including the device drivers. I install MS Office 2003 and all the
rest of our normal apps. I open Outlook 2003, work in it a while and go to
close Outlook 2003. OL will not close unless I end task it in task manager.
All of the Office updates have also been installed. I have 2 new laptops
like this. Any clue to why OL will not shutdown?

WinFax Pro was causing that problem for me. Removed the integration and it
was OK.

I have Palm's HotSync manager running, but have had that for almost seven
years. I have tried closing it, and that does not help. The thing I'm
having difficulty with is that Outlook not closing (or simply freezing) is
so random. I will be sending a short, plain text email, and
BOOM....Outlook's crashed. Outlook is *mostly* usable, but it seems to be
getting increasingly unstable. I've run scanpst and corrected problems, but
that never seems to keep the problem solved.

As for other addins, I have PGP and the Windows fax software. PGP (8.1) has
been giving me grief, especially when numerous emails are selected, but once
again disabling this add-in does not seems to have any long term effect.

Other info: WinXP SP2, Office 2003 Pro SP1, P IV 3ghz, 1.5g RAM, 160gb HD.

Hi - if this is a new question, post it as a new message, not as a reply to
an existing thread. More people will see it that way.

I don't have any add-inn's, fax software or handheld sync software.

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click
either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Cover Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Bill Williams asked:

Here are the results from trying the items below:

1. - The user does have an iPaq so we uninstalled active sync. Outlook still
didn't work.
2. - We don't run WinFax Pro.
3. - We don't run Franklin-Covey Plan Plus.
4. - The user had 1 COM add-in. We unchecked it. Outlook still didn't work.
5. - The user unchecked the mail reminder display. Outlook still didn't
work.
6. - The user uses Symantec NAV. We stopped the service. Outlook still
didn't work.
